Konta Struggling to Stay in Top 20
2017 was a great year for British tennis player Johanna Konta. Not only did she reach the Wimbledon semi-final but Konta also won the Miami Open. Two years later, the British player made it to the last eight of three of the four Grand Slams but she's struggling to show anything like that form now. A tough battle lies ahead as Konta takes on Petra Kvitova in the third round.
The past couple of years have seen her win just one match in four Grand Slam events. Her world ranking has began to slide and she started this tournament in 18th place. That's four places lower than at the start of 2021.
Konta played three tournaments in Australia in January and February. Her only win came in the Gippsland Trophy when beating Bernarda Pera. Since then, Konta has lost to qualifer Kava Juvan in the Australian Open and to Shelby Rogers in the Adelaide Classic, winning just four games. It was a hard luck story in the Australian Open as she had to retire in the second set due to injury.
In this tournament, Konta has finally got another win. The Brit beat Magda Linette 6-4 7-5 to reach this third round match against Petra Kvitova. A much improved performance is going to be needed to get past the ninth seed.
Better Luck for Kvitova in Miami?
While Johanna Konta is yet to string together two successive wins, Petra Kvitova has already won a tournament this year. The world number ten will be hoping to make it past the quarter finals in this tournament for the first time in her career.
Kvitova has reached the last eight only twice in the past. The last time was in 2019 when losing to Ashleigh Barty in three sets. Kvitova had the chance to top the world rankings if winning that event. No such situation this year but the Czech has been in good form in the past month or so.
Her year got off to a slow start when playing in Australia. Kvitova exited in the second round of the Australian Open being beaten by Sorana Cirstea in three sets. The first set was lost, Kvitova levelled but then lost the final set 6-1.
Kvitova didn't play again until the start of this month. A great return was made though with victory in the Qatar Total Open. All the players she beat were ranked in the top 45 and the final saw her defeat Garbine Muguruza for the loss of just three games.
Muguruza went on to win the Dubai Tennis Championships the following week. Kvitova also took part in that tournament but didn't have such a good week. Her first match was her only one as she lost to Jil Tiechmann. Kvitova lost the first set and retired in the second when 4-3 ahead.
Petra Kvitova got off to a strong start in the Miami Open with a win over Elize Cornet. The Czech won the first set without dropping a game, then took the second 6-4. Another good performance looks likely for Kvitova here and she can win this match in straight sets.
