Sabalenka Set for Quarter Finals
World number eight Aryna Sabalenka has a good chance here of reaching the last eight of the Miami Open. The Belarusian faces Marketa Vondrousova who beat Belinda Bencic in the last 32.
Sabalenka saw 2021 get off to a good start when winning the Abu Dhabi tournament. That was in fact her third consecutive title win, not something that happens a great deal. Sabalenka had ended 2020 with tournament victories in the Czech Republic and Austria. There was some good scalps too including wins over Coco Gauff, Jennifer Brady, Victoria Azarenka, Barbora Krejcikova and Elise Mertens.
Then came that third success with victory in Abu Dhabi with players beaten including Maria Sakkari, Elena Rybakina and in the final, Veronika Kudermetova. All good runs come to an end though and the Gippsland Trophy saw her beaten by Kaia Kanepi who was ranked 94th at the time.
Sabalenka has been consistent since then but not made it past a quarter final. The Australian Open saw her lose to Serena Williams in three sets in the last 16. Garbine Muguruza has been a thorn in her side of late. The in-form Spaniard beat Sabalenka in both Qatar and Dubai. They are in separate halves of this draw.
Sabalenka had been knocked out in the second round in her two previous Miami appearances. She must have been thinking it was going to be a third second round loss this year. The second round saw her beat qualifier Tvetsana Pironka but lost the first set 6-0. She rallied well to take the next two with the final set going to an 11-9 tie-break.
It was a lot easier in the third round as the number seven seed beat Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets. The first went to a tie-break so don't be surprised if there is one in this match.
Vondrousova Loves Miami
Marketa Vondrousova is world ranked 20 and is bidding to reach her second Miami quarter final. The other was in 2019 (the last time this event was held), when losing in straight sets to Karolina Pliskova. A few weeks later, she went on to reach the French Open final. .
In Australia this year Vondrousova reached the last four of the Yarra Valley Classic. No wins over any player in the top 40 and she then lost to Garbine Muguruza, winning just one game. The Australian Open saw her make it to the last 16 but she lost to doubles specialist Su-Weih Hsieh. Her most recent tournament was in Dubai, losing to Coco Gauff in the last 32. The first set was won against the young American but Vondrousova lost the next two 6-0 6-4.
This week has seen better form from the Czech. In the last round, she had to come from a set down to beat the 11th seeded Belinda Bencic. The winner of this last 16 tie faces either Ashleigh Barty or Victoria Azarenka. Vondrousova has won two of her previous three matches against Sabalenka. Those two wins came on hard courts in 2017 and 2018 before Sabalenka beat her on grass later in 2018.
We have a fascinating match ahead of us. Sabalenka knows how to win tournaments and has been consistent this year. Vondrousova not so consistent but likes it in Miami. A bet on Sabalenka winning in three sets, possibly with a tie-breaker looks good.
