MATCH PREVIEW

Mertens Out to Improve Record against Halep

Elise Mertens is seeded 13th for the Madrid Open. Fresh from a final in Istanbul, the Belgian takes on third seeded Simona Halep on Tuesday. This is a third round tie with the winner facing either Aryna Sabalenka or Jessica Pegula in the last eight.

It's been a good year so far for Mertens with one tournament victory, another final and a semi-final appearance. Her win came in the Gippsland Trophy with wins over both Elina Svitolina and Caroline Garcia. It might have been a bit different if Naomi Osaka hadn't withdrawn from their semi final. Her time down under ended with a run to the last sixteen in the Australian Open with a win over Belinda Bencic. The semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championship followed, losing to Garbine Muguruza. That meeting with Osaka finally took place in Miami, with the world number two winning in straight sets.

Mertens made a slow start to her clay court season, losing in her first match in Charleston to Elize Cornet. Form has picked up since then, going all the way to the final in Istanbul, losing to Sorana Cirstea in straight sets. That was her fifth WTA Tour final on clay with two won and now three lost. Mertens did get a win over Veronika Kudermetova, who had won that Charleston tournament. Still a bit disappointing though as Mertens was the number one seed for that tournament and Cirstea was ranked 67th at the time.

The bonus with that run to the final was that Mertens has had plenty of time on clay.  Mertens has reached five finals on clay but had previously not made it past the second round in this tournament and never past the fourth round of the French Open.

This week has seen her get two straight sets wins over Zhang Shuai and Elina Rybakina. Her record against Halep is not a good one though with four defeats out of five. Her only win came in Qatar two years ago. A big win though as that was the tournament final. On clay, Halep has won all three previous matches, including the final of the Prague Open last year.

Halep Bidding for Third Madrid Title

Simona Halep is a former French champion, winning the title in 2018. Halep had reached two previous Paris finals and won this title on two occasions. A formidable player to take on and the Romanian made a good start to her clay court season in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart last month.

2021 had been a bit quiet for Halep and only four tournaments had been played before arriving in Stuttgart. The Romanian had reached the quarter finals in both the Gippsland Trophy and Australian Open. A month later, Halep returned to the circuit in Miami but after winning one match, withdrew from the next.

Stuttgart saw her injury-free winning two matches before losing in the last four to fifth seeded Aryna Sabalenka. She could get revenge in the next round if Sabalenka beats Pegula in the last sixteen. So far in this tournament, Halep has had atraight sets wins over Sara Sorribes Tormo and Zheng Saisai. Both matches saw her win the first set without dropping a game.

Halep will want another good run in a tournament she has excelled in previously. Back her to get the win over Mertens, most likely in straight sets.
