Sabalenka Continues Great Run

Wednesday was a great day for Aryna Sabalenka. It was her 23rd birthday and she also managed to beat Elise Mertens to reach this Madrid Open semi-final. Sabalenka is now 8-1 on clay this year and takes on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for a place in the final against either Ashleigh Barty or Paula Badosa.

Sabalenka had few problems against her doubles partner Elise Mertens. The first set was won 6-1 and a thigh injury caused Mertens to retire when 4-0 down in the second set. That was good and bad news for Sabalenka who will want to see Mertens fit again so they can team up at the French Open.

The Belarusian has made a storming start to her 2021 clay court season. Her only other tournament on this surface was in Stuttgart where she lost to Barty in the final after taking the first set. Sabalenka beat world number three Simona Halep on her way to the final.

This week has seen her been in dominant form with only 13 games dropped in her four matches. Vera Zvonareva, Daria Kasatkina and Jessica Pegula have been the other three players she's beaten in this tournament. It's the first time Sabalenka has made it past the first round of the Madrid Open. A win in this semi-final will take her into only her second WTA Tour clay court final. Her only other final was three years ago, when being beaten by Elise Mertens.

The Pavlyuchenkova Resurgence Continues

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is looking to beat her third seed in this tournament. Ranked 41st in the world, the Russian is just two wins away from a 13th singles title. On clay, she has won three main tour finals, the last being in 2018. Her ranking has slipped over the years, the highest position she has held is 13th but that was back in 2011.

Her run in the Madrid Open will see her back in the top 30 next week. It's an important time to be climbing the rankings as that position will see her seeded in the upcoming French Open. This is her best run in the Madrid Open, beating the quarter final appearance she had in 2011.

Pavlyuchenkova hadn't got past the last sixteen in a tournament until this event. It's not been an easy path to the last four. Wins have come against Madison Keys, sixth seeded Karolina Pliskova and 11th seed Jennifer Brady. Her quarter final was against Karollina Muchova, who had beaten Naomi Osaka. It was a marathon two hour match that saw the Russian win via two tie-breaks. How much has that taken out of her, especially after having to go to three sets to get past Brady.

There has only been one previous meeting between these two players. That was in Toronto in 2019 with a three set win for the Russian. Another long battle may be on the cards here but Sabalenka can get the win to most likely set up a rematch with Barty.
