MATCH PREVIEW

Muchova Out to Reach Another Semi-Final

We are guaranteed an unseeded semi-finalist as Karolina Muchova takes on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. It's been an excellent week for Muchova, who began this event ranked  22nd in the world but will be in the top 20 in the next list.

Muchova made an impressive start to the new year. A quarter final was reached in the Gippsland Trophy but she withdrew from the tournament. The Australian Open was where she really made her name. Muchove made it all the way to the semi-finals of that Grand Slam. Wins came against three top sixteen players, namely Elise Mertens, Karolina Pliskova and world number one Ashleigh Barty. A place in the final was denied to her when being beaten by Jennifer Brady in three sets.

It's all been a bit quiet since then with no tournaments played until the recent Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. That clay tournament didn't go well for the Czech, losing in her first match to Ekaterina Alexandrova in a three-setter. It's been a much more successful week in Madrid though.

Again she's been doing well against highly ranked players. Muchova knocked out world number two Naomi Osaka in round two and then 16t seeded Maria Sakkari in the next, both matches being three-setters.

Muchova hasn't got the best of records on clay. Before this Madrid Open, she'd only played two games in the past two years and lost them both. 2019 had been more successful, losing to Jill Tiechmann in a clay court final.  On the ITF circuit, five finals on clay were reached between 2014 and 2018, the only win being seven years ago in Slovakia.  Her best performance at the French Open was a second round appearance in 2019, a much better performance looks likely this year.

Pavlyuchenkova In Improved Form

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is ranked 41st in the world and a win over Muchova could take her into the top 30. Her highest ever ranking has been 13th but that was ten years ago.and this week has seen much better form from her.

The Russian was ranked 30th this time last year but it's not been that successful a period for her in the past 12 months. She has made it to six Grand Slam quarter finals in her career but lost all of them. The last of those was in the 2020 Australian Open. You have to go back ten years for her only last eight appearance in the French Open. She's also been in five doubles Grand Slam quarter finals, losing all of those too.

Pavlyuchenkova is in her 13th WTA 1000 quarter final, just two have been won and the most recent was in 2010. Her best run in this event was a quarter final in 2011 and now she's finally in anothe one. The Russian has won 12 singles titles in her career, so a few quarter finals have been won. Three main tour clay titles have been won, her last success being three years ago.

This week has seen her rolling back the years after an uneventful 2021. Seven previous tournaments played in this year have seen her fail to get past the last sixteen. That's finally been achieved in Madrid with wins over Madison Keys and then two seeds: Karolina Pliskova (6th) and Jennifer Brady (11th), the latter in three sets.

There has only been one previous match against Muchova. That was in Moscow two years ago with the Russian getting a three set win. Muchova looks in the better form now and can reach her second semi-final of the year.
