MATCH PREVIEW

Zidansek Rising Up the Rankings

Not one of the top 20 seeds has made it to the last eight in the bottom half of the draw. The women's singles final at Roland Garros has a habit of seeing lower ranked players contesting it. That's going to happen again this year and few would have predicted a last eight match between Paula Badosa and Tamara Zidansek. The winner of this match faces either Elina Rybakina or Anastasia Pavlyuchenko.

Zidansek is unseeded but then again, so was Iga Swiatek last year. This tournament began with her ranked 85th in the world but the live rankings have her at 64th. A win over Badosa would take her into the top 50 in the world. Her highest ever ranking is 56th achieved in July 2019.

The Slovenian was as low as 93rd in February of this year. 2021 began with a run to the last 16 in Abu Dhabi and that included a win over Jennifer Brady, now in the top 16. Her form dipped though with only three wins in her next five matches. The switch to clay helped transform her year. Zidansek reached the semi-finals in Bogota but all her wins came against players ranked outside the top 100.

Returning to Europe, Zidansek took a set off Ashleigh Barty in the Madrid Open first round. There was little of note to report until she arrived at Roland Garros. Her record in the French Open before this tournament wasn't inspiring. Two appearances had produced a couple of first round losses and she had to face a seed in this year's first round.

Zidansek lost the first set to sixth seeded Bianca Andreescu but fought back to win a classic. No final set tie break at Roland Garros and the Slovenian won it 9-7 to finally win at Roland Garros. Madison Brengle was beaten in round two with only five games lost. It was tough again in round three though as the 23-year-old took on Katerina Siniakova and didn't win a game in the first set. She fought back (well she was born on Boxing Day) to win a second set tie-break and the final set 6-2. The last 16 saw her defeat Sorana Cirstea in straight sets. Another tie-break in that match making it four so far for her and that 9-7 final set.

Badosa Having Impressive Clay Court Season

Paula Badosa is the world number 35 and the 33rd seed at Roland Garros. The Spaniard began this year in 70th position and the live rankings have her at 32nd which would beat her career best of 34th. Winning this match though will take her up to 24th in the live rankings so that's a big incentive.

March saw her reach the last four in Lyon but she would have expected more. The 23-year-old lost to eventual winner Clara Tauson who was down at 139th in the rankings. The big tournament for Badosa came in Charleston with a win over world number one Ashleigh Barty in straight sets having already defeated Belinda Bencic. Badosa lost to Veronika Kudermetova in the semi-final.

Her run of good form on clay continued in Madrid where another semi-final was reached. Belinda Bencic was beaten again but this time Ashleigh Barty beat her in straight sets. It was in Serbia where Badosa at last got through to a final. Not just that but she beat Ana Konjuh to win the title.

Badosa has fond memories of Roland Garros having won the junior title there six years ago. Her main draw debut for the women's singles saw her get to the fourth round last year. This time around she's beaten Lauren Davis, Danka Kovinic (just two games lost) but then had to come from a set down to beat Ana Bogdan in round three. The last 16 saw her again have to go to a final set as she knocked out 20th seeded Marketa Vondrousova (runner-up here two years ago) in three sets.

This is the first match between these two players and its an intriguing one. A bet on a tie-break looks a good one to make, Badosa has also had two of those in this tournament. Who's going to win? Slight preference is for Badosa in three sets.
