MATCH PREVIEW

Can Kenin Prevent Another Shock?

Could we see another shock at Roland Garros on Saturday? Fourth seed Sofia Kenin takes on Jessica Pegula in the third round of the French Open. The winner takes on either Maria Sakkari or Elise Mertens in the last 16, so at least we have one match that will be an all-seeded battle.

Kenin is ranked fifth in the world but fourth here due to the absence of the injured Simona Halep. Women's singles events are known for their unpredictability and this year has seen that again at Roland Garros. Never could Kenin have imagined that on the first Friday of the French Open, she'd be the highest ranked player left in the women's singles. That's mainly due to the retirement of Ashleigh Barty and withdrawal of Naomi Osaka. Then on Friday, third seeded Aryna Sabalenka lost and that left Kenin as the top ranked player left.

The American is bidding to reach the final at Roland Garros for the second successive year. 2020 saw her reach her first final here but was well beaten by Iga Swiatek, who is in her half of the draw this year. Kenin hasn't had the best of years and arrived at Roland Garros with a 7-8 record for the year. At least it's a positive 9-8 record now but not great.

Kenin began the year as the defending Australian Open champion.  She made the last eight in Abu Dhabi, losing to Maria Sakkari, who she could meet here in the last 16. In a warm-up event for that Grand Slam, Kenin beat Jessica Pegula in the Yarra Valley Classic but needed three sets to do so and she had to come from behind. Kenin lost to Garbine Muguruza in the last eight of that event. Her Australian Open title defence ended in the second round as the American lost to Kaia Kanepi in straight sets.

It's been further downhill since then for Kenin. Before this week, she'd won one match in her last five tournaments. Three events on clay this year saw her lose in her first match. Finally, Kenin got a win on this surface beating former champion Jolena Ostapenko in three sets (middle set lost) and followed that with a straight sets win over American teenager Hailey Baptiste.

Pegula Again in Good Form

Jessica Pegula began this year ranked 63rd in the world but is now up to 28th. This time last year she was down in 80th. In terms of the number of ranking points earned this year, the American began the week in ninth, compared to 66th for her opponent. That sums up the records these two players have had in the lead up to this French Open.

2021 has seen her get to the last eight in the Australian Open beating Elina Svitolina on the way. She won six matches in Doha to get to the semi-final where Petra Kvitova beat her. Another top ten player was beaten with Karolina Pliskova defeated. The following tournament saw her beat Pliskova again as she got to the last eight in Dubai. Pliskova was probably sick of the American after losing to her again in Miami.

On clay, Pegula had another last eight appearance, this time in the Rome Masters, beating Naomi Osaka in straight sets in the last 32. She lost in the first round in Strasbourg but it's still been a big year for her.  There has been three previous meetings with Kenin and Pegula leads 2-1. There had been wins in 2016 and 2018 before her loss to Kenin in Australia this year. This is their first meeting on clay.

Pegula has done a lot better at Roland Garros than in 2020. The American had a tough draw and won just four games in her first round match against Aryna Sabalenka. That loss meant that just like Daniil Medvedev, she'd never won a main draw match in the French Open. The Russian has changed that this year and so has Pegula.

The first round saw her beat Zhu Lin in three sets (middle set lost) and then she defeated unseeded Tereza Martincova in straight sets. This is tougher but Pegula is up to the task. Kenin has a good record on clay but not so brilliant this year. A bet on Pegula to win is recommended but it might take three sets.
