Stephens Back in Form at Roland Garros
It's been another unpredictable French Open women's singles tournament. Only two of the top 16 seeds remain and this match is between two unseeded players. Sloane Stephens takes on Barbora Krejcikova with the winner up against either Coco Gauff or Ons Jabeur (the 24th and 25th seeds) in the last eight.
Sloane Stephens is down at 59th in the world but was at number three in 2019. Stephens is a bit like a top ten record now slipping down the charts, not selling so many copies but still a great song. The American is a former finalist at Roland Garros losing to Simona Halep three years ago after winning the first set. The year before that, Stephens had won the US Open but form has dipped since reaching the last eight in Paris two years ago.
Six Grand Slams since then have seen her fail to get past the third round, that run has been broken this week. Stephens has had a good European clay court season with a semi-final in Parma. Before that she made it to the last eight in Charleston. It's a big improvement on her previous 2021 form that saw her win just one in five matches. the win coming against a player outside the top 100.
This tournament began with a three-set win (middle set loss) over the returning Carla Suarez Navarro. Another good win came in round two as she beat ninth seeded Karolina Pliskova in straight sets. Round three saw another seed ousted by the American with 19th seeded Karolina Muchova being beaten for the loss of eight games. The wins are needed as she has those points from 2019 to defend and is down to 67 in the live rankings.
Busy Times for Krejcikova
It could be a busy week at Roland Garros for Barbora Krejcikova Not only is the Czech in the last 16 of the singles but is also the second seed in the doubles with Katerina Sianakova. Krejcikova is currently ranked 33rd in the singles (she's never been higher) but seventh in the doubles but is having a good year in both categories.
Krejcikova will go into the top 30 for the first time if beating Stephens. This year has seen her reach the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships. On clay, there's been a last 16 appearance in Rome with Sofia Kenin beaten before losing to Iga Swiatek, who she could meet in the last four in Paris.
Better was to come when winning a WTA 250 tournament in Strasbourg. That good form has continued in the French Open. This is the second year in a row she's made it to the fourth round. The first round saw her have to come from a set down tobeat Kristyna Pliskova. 32nd seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova was beaten in round two with her opponent only winning five games. Five must be her lucky number because in round three, Krejcikova beat fifth seeded Elina Svitolina and again only lost five games.
This is her first match against Sloane Stephens. Both players are in good form and it's hard to choose between them. Stephens knows her way around a clay court and is always a danger on this surface. Krejcikova is also in good form and having a good year in the singles ranks. A bet on over 20.5 games and a three setter are possible winners. Who'll win? Slight preference is for Krejcikova.
