MATCH PREVIEW

The Final That Few Expected

It's a final that few if any could have predicted. Seed after seed has either been beaten or pulled out of the tournament this year. All of which means that the French Open final sees 31st seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova takes on unseeded Barbora Krejcikova, both in their first ever Grand Slam final.

Pavlyuchenkova first played at Roland Garros 13 years ago. In all that time, the 29-year-old has only made it to the last eight once and that was in 2011. In her last six Grand Slams tournaments only once did she get past the second round. All of that has been put behind her at Roland Garros with this run to the final.

The Russian began the French Open in 32nd place but is up to 18th in the live rankings. Winning this final will take her to 14th, one place below her highest ever ranking achieved four years ago. It's been a good year for her but before this tournament began, she'd won nine matches and lost the same number.

Her year began with a first round exit in the Australian Open being beaten by eventual winner Naomi Osaka. That means if she does lose this final, the first two Grand Slams of the year will have seen her lose to the tournament winner. Little form was shown until the clay court season began and Pavlyuchenkova reached the last four in Madrid.

That was a big week for her with her four wins all being against players ranked in the top 23 at the time. This is her first event since that tournament and in her last eight visits to Roland Garros, Pavlyuchenkova has only once made it past the second round. That's all changed this week as she's continued her excellent form. Wins have come against third seeded Aryna Sabalenka (who had beaten her in Madrid), number 15 seed Victoria Azarenka, Elena Rybanka (the 21st seed won the first set) and in the last eight unseeded Tamara Zidansek.

Not Just a Doubles Specialist

This should be a close match as Barbora Krejcikova is only one place below her opponent on the latest ranking list. The Czech is known for her doubles results but that's changed now. She is a former winner of the French Open women's double title and is in this year's final so it's one heck of a weekend for her.

The emergence of Krejcikova as a singles player began at last year's French Open. She got to the fourth round and followed that up with a semi-final in Linz and last eight in Dubai. The latter is a place she must love playing in as the Czech reached the Dubai Tennis Championships this year.

Her clay court season wasn't going well until winnning a WTA 250 tournament in Strasbourg, though no top 30 ranked player was beaten. That's not been the case at Roland Garros with wins over Elena Svitolina, Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari. Her live ranking is now 21st and can rise to 15th if becoming French Open champion. Her win over Sakkari took over three hours to achieve and she had to save a match point.

A three-set match looks very likely here. Pavlyuchenkova has more singles experience than her opponent and looks to be in the slightly better form, back her to win the title.
