MATCH PREVIEW

Long Battle Likely

It's rarely an easy task to predict who will be in the final stages of a women's singles event. That's the case again at Roland Garros in 2021. We're at the last four stage and not one of the top 16 seeds have survived the first five rounds of the French Open. We could even see two unseeded players in the final. That'll be the case if Tamara Zidansek wins this semi-final and Barbora Krejcikova can beat Maria Sakkari in the other semi-final.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is the 31st seed at Roland Garros. The 29-year-old is climbing back up the rankings and is up to 22 in the live rankings. A win over Zidansek will take her up to 18th, that's five below her best ever ranking and that was achieved ten years ago. You also have to go back to 2011 for the previous best performance by the Russian at Roland Garros. That year she made it to the last eight but a decade later finally gets into her first semi-final.

Pavlyuchenkova had played in six previous Grand Slam quarter finals but this is the first time that's she's made it to the last four. It's been a successful year for the 29-year-old and she's up to 15th in the WTA Race for points earned this year. A win in this match could take her as high as seventh, so a Tour Final appearance is possible this year.

The Russian has had some big wins in 2021. A run to the last four in Madrid saw her beat four of the top 25 ranked players including world number nine Karolina Pliskova. Three seeds have been beaten by her in this tournament. Aryna Sabalenka (third seed) was beaten first and then 15th seeded Victoria Azarenka. In the last eight, she took on Elena Rybakina and lost the first set to the 21st seed. Pavlyuchenkova fought back well and won a marathon match 9-7 in the final set. How much will that have taken out of her?

Best Week Ever for Zidansek

Tamara Zidansek is bidding to make it two years in a row that an unseeded woman has won the Roland Garros title. At the start of the tournament, she was ranked 85th in the world but up to 47th in the live rankings. A win here can take her up to 32nd. Winning the title would see her become the lowest ranked player to win the French Open Women's Singles in the open era.

Zidansek was down at 93 earlier in 2021 but the Slovenian has been steadily climbing the rankings. The last 16 was reached in Abu Dhabi and the last four in a clay court tournament held in Bogota. A glimpse of what she is capable of in clay was shown in Madrid when taking a set off Ashleigh Barty.

Two previous main draw appearances at Roland Garros had failed to produce a win for Zidansek. Last year she lost to 11th seeded Garbine Muguruza but did take a set off her. This year also saw her up against a seed in the first round. This time Zidansek got the win but the hard way. The first set was lost to sixth seeded Bianca Andreescu but the 23-year-old won 9-7 in the final set. Since then there have been wins over Madison Brengle, Katerina Siniakova (first set lost to love) and Sorana Cirstea.

In the last eight she beat 33rd seed Paula Badosa in three sets. The middle set was the one lost and the final set went to 8-6. Back Pavlyuchenkova to put her greater experience to good use and get the win. It may well be a three-setter and a bet on over 21.5 games looks a winner.
