MATCH PREVIEW

Sabalenka Bids to Continue Good Year

It's already  been a successful year for Aryna Sabalenka. The number three seed opens her French Open campaign against Ana Konjuh and it looks a fascinating match. Sabalenka received good news in the draw  for this tournament that could see her get to the final. Ashleigh Barty and Iga Swiatek, two of the top tips to win this title, are in the other half of the draw. That wouldn't have been the case if Simona Halep hadn't pulled out injured. The highest seed in Sabalenka's half is Naomi Osaka and she's not in the best of form at present, nor talking to journalists.

Sabalenka has won two titles so far this year. The first was right at the start of 2021 in Abu-Dhabi, the other on clay in the Madrid Open. The latter was a big win for Sabalenka with a win over Ashleigh Barty in the final. That was revenge for the previous week when Barty had beaten her in the final of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

Her most recent tournament was the Rome Masters. The 23-year-old lost to Coco Gauff, in the last 16 of that tournament. That ended a run to at least the last eight in her previous four tournaments. Sabalenka has never made it past the third round at the French Open. Last year saw her lose to 30th seeded Ons Jabeur in round three. Her form this year indicates that a much better run is likely.

Konyuh on the Comeback Trail

Ana Konyuh is ranked 144th in the world, so you might think this will be an easy match for the third seed. However, four years ago, Konyuh was the world number 20 but then had to have elbow surgery. It's been a long hard fight to get back up the rankings since her return from that injury.

Konyuh has climbed 340 places up the rankings this year. Her best performance came in the Miami Open, a Masters event with plenty of ranking points available. Konyuh had wins over Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek before losing to Anastasija Sevastova in the last sixteen. Four clay tournaments have been played by her this year with some good results along the way.

The last eight was reached in Istanbul and an ITF tournament in Prague. Then came the Serbia Open and Konjuh made it all the way to the final. She lost to Paula Badosa in the final, losing the first set and then retiring in the second when 2-0 down. Fit again, she had to win three matches to get through to this first round of the French Open.

Recent wins must have given her a big boost in confidence. Her record at Roland Garros isn't a great one, never getting past the second round. It's unlikely she's going to beat Sabalenka but it won't be a walkover. A handicap bet on her or going for over 18.5 games could produce a win in this match.
