MATCH PREVIEW

The Dream Final

There have been a few times we thought it might not happen. However, both Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have made it through to the Rome Masters final. These two players have won this tournament 13 times between them but who will win this Sunday?

Novak Djokovic had a rather busy Saturday and will need a good night's sleep. The day began with his rain delayed quarter final against Stefanos Tsitsipas. He was a set down and had been broken in the second when they resumed. Djokovic battled his way back into the match and ran out a three set winner.

That took him into a semi-final against Lorenzo Sonego. He would have preferred a routine win over his unseeded opponent and that's what it looked like being. The first set was won 6-3 but this was not to be a straight set win for the number one seed. The second set was lost by Djokovic on a tie-break but he got the initiative back to win the final set 6-2. However, the match lasted 17 minutes short of three hours, not ideal for Djokovic.

The world number one has won this title on four previous occasions. The semi-final against Sonego was his eighth in a row in Rome. He's won one title this season, the Australian Open in February. Now he takes on his old rival Rafael Nadal and this is their 57th meeting. No other two players have met as many times and it's 29-27 to Djokovic.

Their last match was in the French Open final last year. Nadal won that in straight sets and that was his fourth consecutive win over Djokovic on clay. You have to go back to 2015 for the last time Djokovic got a win over Nadal on this surface. This is their fourth meeting in Rome, all finals and Nadal is 2-1 up.

Tenth Title for Nadal?

Rafael Nadal is in his 12th final in Rome and has won nine titles, compared to his opponents four. He'll be out to win a tenth title and dethrone the defending champion. Nadal has already won one major clay court tournament this year, winning the title in Barcelona. If he can get to Paris with recent wins over Djokovic, Tsitsipas and Zverev, that will be put him in a good mood for yet another Paris defence. He has two of them, now to beat the world number one.

While Djokovic had two tough matches on Saturday, Nadal's route to this final wasn't so hard. He beat unseeded Reilly Opelka in straight sets 6-4 6-4. He's played 12 semi-finals in Rome and won the whole lot. Winning this title will equal the record of 36 Masters wins.  Like his opponent, it hasn't been so easy getting this far. He saved match points against Denis Shapovalov and had 10 break points against him in his quarter final against Alexander Zverev, nine of which were saved.

A titanic battle awaits us on Sunday. Nadal does have the advantage of a long rest between his semi-final and this match. Djokovic had not one but two tough matches on Saturday. Nadal can get a tenth title but this may well go to three sets.
