MATCH PREVIEW

Busy Day for Djokovic

It was looking as if world number one Novak Djokovic might not make it into this semi-final. He had an almighty tough battle to get past Stefanos Tsitisipas in his quarter final. Now he takes on unseeded Lorenzo Sonego in the last four of the Rome Masters. The winner will take on either Rafael Nadal or Reilly Opelka in the final.

Djokovic probably didn't sleep that well last night. Rain had caused his quarter final match to be delayed and he was a set down to Tsitsipas and a break down in the second. The pair returned this morning and fought back to win the second set. Despite being broken in the final set, Djokovic eventually won the decider 7-5.

This is the eighth year in a row that Djokovic has reached the semi-final of this tournament. He is the defending champion and another title win this year would be his fifth win. Only once has he failed to win a semi-final in this event and will be confident of getting past his unseeded opponent. How much will that match against Tsitispas have taken out of him though?

Djokovic hasn't had a heavy schedule this year. He won the Australian Open in February and didn't play again until last month's Monte Carlo Masters. That didn't go well for him, he suffered his first loss of 2021 when being beaten by Daniel Evans in the last 16. He did better in Belgrade but lost in the last four to Aslan Karatsev who he'd beaten at the same stage in the Australian Open.

This week has seen him get wins over Taylor Fritz and Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina (losing just three games). With the French Open just weeks away he'll be keen to get another title under his belt. That'd be a real confidence boost for him

Sonego Out to Cause Shock Number Four

Lorenzo Sonego has had one heck of a week in Rome. Beating Dominic Thiem was a great result for him, then he defeated Andrey Rublev in his quarter final. His world ranking was 33 at the start of this event. He was a 46 in May 2020 and the live rankings have him at 28th. Keeping that position would get him a seeding at the French Open. He's also going to be the new Italian number two, climbing above Fabio Fognini, so a good week for him, can it get better?

He hasn't had the best of years with a quarter final in Montpellier and reaching the last 16 in Miami, both hard court tournaments. He's doing well on clay though and won the tournament held in Cagliari. Monte Carlo saw him lose to Alexander Zverev in straight sets. This week has seen wins over three seeds. Before the wins over Thiem and Rublev, he'd also beaten Gael Monfils.

There's only been one previous meeting between these two players. Sonego won that one and only dropped three games, it's likely to be a lot tougher this time around. Djokovic can get the win here but two matches in one day is hardly great preparation for a final.
