MATCH PREVIEW

Krajinovic Improving Back on Clay

World number 37 Filip Krajinovic takes on Fabio Fognini in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters. His opponent may only be seeded 15th for this event but he is the defending champion. Will Thursday be the day he loses his crown?

Krajinovic hasn't had too busy a 2021 so far. Before this tournament began, he'd had just six matches this year, winning three of them and losing the other three. Half of his matches were in the Australian Open where he lost in the last 32 to Daniil Medvedev. A disappointing defeat considering he won the first two sets.

The Serb didn't play again until March, taking part in tournaments in Doha and Dubai. In Doha, he lost in straight sets to David Goffin. It went a bit better in Dubai beating  Alejandro Davidovich Fokina but then losing to Lloyd Harris who went on to lose in the final. Before this event he hadn't beaten anyone this year who is in the world's top 50.

Now he's playing on clay and he has had some success on this surface. 2019 saw him win a Challenger tournament in Germany, though no players in the top 100 were beaten. He also lost in the final of an ATP 250 clay court event in Hungary in which he beat Borna Coric and took Matteo Berrettini to three sets in the title decider.  He has won ten Challenger tournaments held on clay, and lose 12 finals so there's definitely some promise for him.

This tournament has seen him lose just four games in two matches. He beat recent Doha winner Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round. He won the first set 6-1 and led 2-0 in the second before his opponent retired. Then he defeated Lucky Loser Juan Ignacio Londero 6-0 6-3. A much tougher task awaits him here.

Fognini Bidding to Keep his Title

There was no Monte Carlo Masters last year but in 2019 it was Fabio Fognini who was the winner. He beat Andrey Rublev (then world ranked 90), Alexander Zverev and Rafael Nadal on his way to defeating Dusan Lajovic in the final. Not a bad result considering a loss to a player ranked outside the top 100 just a week before.

Fognini hasn't built on that performance and last year won just one out of five matches on clay with some really poor results. In Austria, he lost to Marc-Andrea Heusler, who was ranked 303rd in the world at the time. So which Fognini turns up this week? The one who can beat the best in the world or one who loses to lowly ranked players on clay?

Over the last year his world ranking has slipped from 11th to 18th. He did reach the last 16 in the Australian Open but won only one match in the next three tournaments. That included losing in the Andalucia Open on clay last week to Jaume Munar. Better form has been shown this week, perhaps he just loves Monte Carlo.

The Italian has played two matches and won them both without dropping a set. Wins have come against Miomir Kecmanovic and Jamie Thompson. Fognini will be out to win his first match against this opponent. Two previous meetings have both been lost to the Serb. Their only clay court meeting was seven years ago with Krajinovic winning in Hamburg 6-4 6-0. The most recent encounter was two years ago in Basel on a hard court, with another straight sets win for the Serb. This promises to be a tight match, Fognini knows how to win here though and can edge a three setter.
