MATCH PREVIEW

Evans Bids for Another Upset

Recent weeks have seen many a shock on the ATP circuit. All of them were surpassed by Daniel Evans beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets on Thursday. That put the British player through to the quarter finals of the Monte Carlo Masters. Can he get another big win when taking on David Goffin?

Evans is the current world number 33 but will be back in the top 30 next week. It's a good time to do that as it can get him seeded at the upcoming French Open. A win over 11th seeded David Goffin is likely to see him improve on his best ever world ranking of 26th. To say his win over Djokovic was a surprise is a major understatement.

It's not just that Evans beat the world number one, but that he did it on clay. Evans has never made it past the first round of the French Open in three attempts. Nor has he won in Madrid or Rome and not before this week in Monte Carlo. He played in last week's clay court tournament in Cagliari and lost in the first round there as well. That made it five consecutive clay court tournament in which he hadn't won a match.

His year did begin well though, winning a hard court tournament in Melbourne. He lost a Battle of the Brits to Cameron Norrie in the first round of the Australian Open. Coming into this event, he'd won one match in four tournaments and then he goes and beats Novak Djokovic! He had shown signs of being a threat in Dubai. He was the comeback opponent of Roger Federer and took him to three sets.

Evans has had three impressive wins on his way to this quarter final. The first round saw him beat Dusan Lajovic in three sets. That included a marathon second set tie-break that he lost 13-11. That took him into a second round tie against recent Miami Open champion Hubert Hurkacz. Evans beat the 13th seed for the loss of just five games. Then came the shock win over Djokovic. Can he beat another seed in the last eight or will it be a case of after the Lord Mayor's Show?

Goffin A Threat on Clay

David Goffin has already won one tournament this year. The Belgian, who is ranked 15th in the world was successful in Montpellier in February, beating Roberto Bautista Agut in the final. Mainly though it's been an up and down year for Goffin. He made it to the last four in Turkey at the start of the year. However, five other tournaments this year have produced just two wins.

On clay though he is a very dangerous opponent. He reached the last four in Monte Carlo four years ago and the quarter final the following year. The Belgian has also made it to the last eight in Madrid, Rome and the French Open. His only ATP Tour title win on clay was seven years ago, beating a young Dominic Thiem in the final. Before that he'd won five clay court titles on the Challenger and Futures circuit.

Goffin has had to win three matches to reach the last eight. He had to go to three sets to beat Marin Cilic in the first round. A win over Mario Cecchinato followed, before an impressive straight sets win over fifth seeded Alexander Zverev. This is going to be a fascinating match. Can Evans continue his good run on a surface he hasn't impressed on in the past? He may well wish there is more time between that win and this quarter final. Goffin has again showed us he can be a threat on clay. This could well go to three sets with Goffin getting the win.
