MATCH PREVIEW

Fognini Battling Hard to Keep Title

Apart from Rafael Nadal, only Juan Carlos Ferrero has retained this title in the past 25 years. Fabio Fognini won the Monte Carlo Masters two years ago. The pandemic meant no event last year and so far the Italian has done well in his title defence. He now takes on Casper Ruud in the last eight. The winner takes on either Rafael Nadal or Andrey Rublev in the semi-finals.

Fognini has slipped from 11 to 18 in the world rankings this year. In singles events, this is his first quarter final of 2021. He did however reach the ATP Cup final with Italy in February winning two and losing two of his four matches.

Only one match had been won in his last three tournaments, so this is a welcome return to form for the Italian. He may have won this title two years ago, but subsequent clay court efforts haven't been good. Only one of his five matches on clay in 2020 ended in success. His clay court debut this year ended in a loss to Jamie Minaur in the Andelucia Open, winning just three games.

This week he has fared much better and is yet to lose a set. The first two rounds saw him defeat Miomir Kecmanovic and Jamie Thompson. His last 16 match saw him defeat Filip Krajinovic 6-2 7-6. It looked as if a three-setter was on the cards as Krajinovic led 5-2 in the second set. Fognini fought back well and won the tie-break 7-1.

This is his first ATP Tour singles quarter final since Shanghai in October 2019. He's not made it to a semi-final since winning this tournament in April 2019. He's lost his last five last eight apearances and will be hoping for better luck this time around.

Ruud Chasing Hat-Trick of Wins

Casper Ruud has only met his opponent twice in the past and won both of them. The most recent was on clay in Hamburg last year. Before that, Ruud beat the Italian in the 2020 ATP Cup and has never lost a set to Fognini.

The Norwegian player is up to 27 in the world rankings, a rise of nine places in the past year. His highest ever ranking has been 24th and a win here will see him beat that personal record. Ruud is in his third quarter final of 2021 but is yet to make it to the last four. His two other last eight appearances were in the Mexican and Andelucia Opens.

The latter was his first clay tournament of the year. He lost in the second round to Carlos Alcarez, ranked 133rd in the world at that time. Ruud has made it to three ATP Tour finals in his career, all on clay. His one win was the 2020 Argentinian Open and Ruud also won three Challenger titles on this surface. Last year saw him reach the semi-final of the Rome Masters event before losing to Novak Djokovic. That made him the only Norwegian to reach a Masters semi-final.

In Monto Carlo this week, he has already knocked out two seeded players. Diego Schwartzmann (7th) was beaten in round two. Then he beat Pablo Carreno Busta (12th) in a marathon match that saw 37 games played. This is hard to predict and a bet on over 21.5 games in the match looks a winning one. As for the winner, that last 16 tie against Busta must have taken a bit out of Ruud. Go for Fognini to get the win, possibly in three sets.
