MATCH PREVIEW

Nadal Aiming for the Dozen

Rafael Nadal has had a relatively quiet 2021 so far. This is only his second tournament of the year but he already looks in great form on clay. The third seed (Nadal third seed on clay?) takes on sixth seeded Andrey Rublev for a place in the Monte Carlo Master semi-final. The winner takes on either defending champion Fabio Fognini or Casper Ruud. Nadal has won this tournament 11 times, that may well become a dozen this weekend.

Nadal's only tournament this year was the Australian Open. He had been due to play for Spain in the ATP Cup but pulled out with an injury. Nadal looked to be on his way to the semi-final in Melbourne. However, his two set lead against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last eight was lost. He hasn't played since and has moved down to number three in the rankings. That's his lowest position since 2017.

With the clay court season underway, Nadal is likely to be climbing the rankings again. Novak Djokovic losing in Monte Carlo and Daniil Medvedev will help him. The Spaniard is the highest seed left in the tournament, one that he last won in 2018. Only once since his first Monte Carlo win in 2005, has he failed to at least reach the last four and that was in 2014.

Despite his absence from the ATP Tour, Nadal has been in scorching form in Monte Carlo. He has won two matches and dropped just five games. Frederico Delbonis managed to win three games, but the 14th seeded Grigor Dimitrov won just two. This quarter final will be a bit tougher than those two games, or will they?

Can Rublev be Consistent on Clay?

Andrey Rublev has climbed up to eighth in the world rankings. He has faced Nadal only twice in his career and both ended in straight set defeats. A 2017 US Open meeting saw Rublev win just five games in three sets. He's improved a lot since then but still only took seven games off him in last year's ATP Tour Finals. This is their first match played on a clay court.

Rublev has played five singles tournaments this year. Only in the Australian Open did he fail to at least make the semi-finals. The Russian won in Rotterdam and has lost in three successive semi-finals since then. His year started with an ATP Cup win with Russia. Now he plays his first clay court tournament of the year.

He has won two ATP Tour events played on this surface. The first was four years ago and in 2020 he won in Hamburg, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. This is his first time past the second round in Monte Carlo but he did reach the quarter finals in the 2020 French Open. This week has seen him beat Salvatore Caruso in his first match of the clay season. He had a tougher task in the last 16 but overcame ninth seeded Roberto Bautista Agut in three sets.

Another semi-final would be a great achievement for Rublev but he's up against Nadal. The Spaniard has shown no signs of slowing down and he can get a straight sets win over his Russian opponent.
