MATCH PREVIEW

Another Semi-Final for Rublev

Andrey Rublev bids to win his 24th match of the year. He's had a highly consistent 2021 and takes on Casper Ruud for a place in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Rublev had one of the best wins of his career on Friday, when beating Rafael Nadal in three sets. He'd won the first and was a break up in the second. Nadal fought back to take the second set but it was Rublev who came out the winner. A victory over Ruud will see him moving above Roger Federer into the world number seven spot. Winning the tournament will see him move into sixth place.

The world number eight began 2021 winning the ATP Cup with Russia, though he didn't beat the higher ranked players, that was the job of Daniil Medvedev. In five singles tournaments before this week, Rublev has only in the Australian Open failed to make it to at least the last four. He won the title in Rotterdam but lost the other three semi-finals. He won't want to be making it four this weekend.

Rublev is chasing a third ATP Tour victory on clay. The most recent was last year when winning the tournament held in Hamburg. He beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in that final and could well play him here on Sunday. British fans would prefer him to be taking on Daniel Evans though. Rublev doesn't have a great record in Monte Carlo. This is his first time past the second round but he's been in great form this week.

Prior to beating Nadal, the Russian had wins over Salvatore Caruso and then ninth seeded Roberto Bautista Agut. He'll be hoping for a fourth win over Casper Ruud having won all their previous meetings. The first two matches between this pair were both on clay in Hamburg. Rublev came from a set down to beat Ruud in three sets in 2019. A year later, he beat Ruud in straight sets on his way to winning that tournament. Their most recent match was at this year's Australian Open. Rublev won the first two sets and then Ruud retired.

A Ruud Awakening for Rublev?

Casper Ruud is set to move up to 24th in the rankings but a win over Rublev can take him into the top 20. 24th would equal his highest ever ranking but he'd love to get through to the final. The Norwegian has been in good form this year having begun 2021 ranked 36th in the world.

Before this week, Ruud had reached two quarter finals. His run ended at that stage in both of those events but finally he's made it into the last four. He has had success on this surface in the past and is out to reach his fourth ATP final, all the previous three having been on clay. A win here would be his second title after previously winning the 2020 Argentinian Open.

Ruud is the only Norwegian player to reach a Masters semi-final. He achieved that feat when making it to the last four in Madrid last year, losing to Novak Djokovic in Rome. Now he's one match away from becoming the first Masters final from Norway.

He has beaten three seeds on his way to this semi-final. Seventh seeded Diego Schwartzmann was ousted in the second round. Pablo Carreno Busta (seeded 12th) was next to be beaten in a three-setter that had 37 matches played on it. That took him into a quarter final against defending champion Fabio Fognini and won that 6-4 6-3. This looks one match too far for him, go for Rublev to get a straight sets victory.
