Fritz Fancied to Progress
Section 4 of the Miami Open draw is going to be won by a player seeded outside the top 20. American Taylor Fritz is the number 22 seed and takes on the lowest seeded player Alexander Bublik in the fourth round. The winner takes on either 21st seed Jannik Sinner or unseeded Emil Ruusuvuori.
Fritz began the year ranked 29th in the world but had slipped to number 32 before this tournament began. A run to the last eight would surely get him back into the top 30. This is the first time that he's made it past the second round of this tournament. His last two trips to Miami have seen him knocked out in the first round.
The 23-year-old is in the fourth round of an ATP Masters event for only the second time in his career. It equals his best of the fourth round in the 2018 Indian Wells event. He did make the third round of the Australian Open this year.
That was the fourth straight Grand Slam in which he's made it that far. Each time though he's failed to make it to the fourth round. He had a slightly tough task in Australia, having to take on eventual winner Novak Djokovic. He lost the first two sets, won the next two but lost the decider 6-2.
Fritz showed good form in Doha, getting to the semi-finals. He beat Denis Shapovalov and David Goffin before losing to Nikolos Basilashvili in straigth sets. Again the player who beat him went on to win the tournament. He got revenge over Basilashvili in Dubai but then lost to Andrey Rublev in the last 16.
In Miamil, he's beaten Marcos Giron, losing just four games. Then he had to get past Britain's Cameron Norrie who had knocked out ninth seeded Grigor Dimitrov in the previous round. The American won the first set, dropped the second but dominated the final set winning it 6-1.
Bublik in Unchartered Territory
Alexander Bublik is the world number 44 and seeded 32nd for this tournament. This is only his second time in the main draw of the Miami Open. His previous appearance was in 2019 when failing to take a set off Nick Kyrgios.
Like his opponent in this fourth round match, Bublik has never made it past the third round in a Grand Slam. His best effort was making it to the third round in the 2019 US Open. His world ranking has climbed five places this year and he's seven higher than this time last year.
The main reason his ranking has improved is his early 2021 form. Bublik reached the final of the tournament held in Antalya. He beat Matteo Berrettini on his way to the final against Alex de Minaur. However, that final only lasted a couple of games before he retired with an injury.
Bublik only reached the second round of the Australian Open, losing to Dusan Lajovic in four sets. He bounced back to form though, losing in the final of a tournament held in Singapore. Bublik didn't beat anyone in the top 60 and would have been disappointed to lose to Alexander Popyrin in the final, who was ranked outside the top 100.
His form dipped a little bit after that but he did beat Alexander Zverev in Rotterdam. He's made it to this fourth round without dropping a set. Wins have come against Laslo Dere and Jack Duckworth. This is a tougher match and Fritz can be backed to get the win.
