Another Final for Agut?

World number 12 Roberto Bautista Agut is on the verge of a third final this year. The seventh seed knocked out top seeded Daniil Medvedev in the quarter finals of the Miami Open. He now takes on 21st seed Jannik Sinner.

It's been a successful year for the Spaniard who can move into the top ten if winning this tournament. His year didn't get off to a good start with a first round exit in the Australian Open. Improvement in Grand Slam events is on his must-do list, with the last five seeing him fail to get past the third round.

Agut took a month off after that Australian Open and he's been firing on all cylinders since. His first final of the year came in Montpellier. He led David Goffin by a set but had to settle for the runners-up spot. A first round exit in Rotterdam followed but the Spaniard hit top form in Doha. He had wins over both Dominic Thiem and Andrey Rublev but lost to surprise finalist Nikoloz Basilashvili.

He'll be thinking of the Dubai Tennis Championships as he prepares for this semi-final. That's because Jannik Sinner beat him there in the last 16 in a tense three-setter.

This is his best run in the Miami Open, beating his 2019 Miami Open quarter final appearance. He didn't have to play a match to get into the third round as he had a first round bye and then a walkover against Lloyd Harris. When he did get on court, Agut had two three-setters against Jan-Lennard Struff (who took the first set off him) and John Isner.

That warmed him up nicely for his quarter final against top seed and world number two Daniil Medvedev. He only dropped six games in causing the upset. That win ended a near five year wait for a place in his second Masters final, the other being a 2016 loss to Andy Murray.

Sinner Chasing Another Win over Agut

Jannik Sinner is world ranked 31st but will be in the top 25 when the next ranking list is produced. He'll be even higher if making it to the final or even winning the Miami Open. Before this week his best performance in a Masters event had been twice reaching the third round of the Italian Open clay tournament. If he keeps up this good run of form, he could be a real danger in the upcoming clay court season.

The Italian won a pre-Australian Open tournament in Melbourne at the start of the year. He had his first of two wins over Karen Khachanov in that event. He showed what a threat he can be to top players when taking Denis Shapovalov to five sets in the Australian Open first round.  Sinnner reached the last eight in Dubai before losing to Aslan Karatsev after winning the first set.

In this tournament, he has only dropped one set so far. That was in the third round when having to come from a set down to again beat Karen Khachanov. His quarter final saw Sinner beat 32nd seed Alexander Bublik in straight sets 7-6 6-4. He's had a good run in Miami and has beaten Agut recently. The Spaniard is in top form this week though and can get revenge for that Dubai defeat.
