Isner Back in Miami
May 2019 was the last time John Isner was a top ten ranked player. He's currently at 28 and takes on world number 120 Mackenzie McDonald in the second round of the Miami Open.
With several top players not taking part in this tournament, Isner is seeded 18th. He will be out to recapture the glory days of playing in the Miami Open. Isner won this title in 2018 and lost in the final a year later. His form has slipped since then though just as it was reaching new levels of success.
2018 had seen him get to the semi-finals at Wimbledon and the last eight in New York. Since then, the big-hitting American hasn't made it past the third round of a Grand Slam. Last year produced a couple of semi-finals in Auckland and Acupulco but he lacks the consistency that took him to world number nine.
This year has been rather quiet for Isner. He lost in the last eight of the Delray Beach Open, being beaten by world 119 Sebastian Korda. Isner didn't take part in the Australian Open unhappy at having to leave his family back home in America. His only other tournament this year was in Acupulco last week. He beat Salvatore Caruso in straight sets but then lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas, winning just five games. Perhaps a return to Miami might inspire him to better days.
McDonald on the Rise
MacKenzie McDonald is currently ranked one place below Andy Murray. He's likely to be ahead of the former Wimbledon champion when the next list is published. The American is 120th in the rankings but is enjoying a good 2021 so far. He began the year ranked 194th in the world and was outside the top 200 this time last year.
McDonald reached the last 16 of this year's Australian Open. He beat Borna Coric and another improving player Lloyd Harris, but then lost to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. Back on the Challenger Tour, McDonald won the tournament held in Kazakhstan. Only one win was over a player in the top 100, 94th ranked Mikhail Kukushkin. Returning to the main tour, McDonald beat Stefano Travaglia (ranked 65th) in Marseille before losing to Karen Khachanov.
The 25-year-old beat Vasek Pospisil in the first round of this tournament. He had to go to three sets to get the victory (middle set lost) in a rather stormy match. His opponent ranted at the umpire and a penalty cost him the first set. It was a good win for McDonald over the world number 67 as his progression up the rankings continues.
This is a fascinating second round match. Isner knows how to win this tournament but has only played four singles matches this year. Can he get back to anything like the level he was when so successful in Miami in 2018 and 2019? He takes on a player that is climbing the rankings and already won a tournament this year, all be it on the Challenger tour. He has a good chance of winning this match and a bet on a tie-break might also be a good idea with Isner around.
