MATCH PREVIEW

Is Sinner a Winner?

The Miami Open has reached the last 32 stage. 21st seeded Jannik Sinner takes on Karen Khachanov who is the number 14 seed. Awaiting the winner in the last 16 was due to be recent Mexican Open winner Alexander Zverev but he lost to Emil Ruusuvuori, who now takes on Mikael Ymer. All of which means the winner of this match will be facing unseeded oppostion in the next round.

Jannik Sinner has already won one tournament this year. He was victorious in a pre-Australian Open tournament held in Melbourne. On his way to the final, Sinner defeated Khachanov in the semi-finals. Two of the sets went to tie-breaks and a bet on one in this match is a good idea. That got him revenge on a five-set loss to Khachanov at last year's US Open in which two sets went to a tie-break.

Sinner didn't fare well in the Australian Open, though he had a pretty tough draw. He was up against Denis Shapovaov in the first round but only lost to the world number 12 in five sets. Sinner has played three tournaments since that Grand Slam. He has reached the last eight in both Marseille and Dubai. That includes a win over world number 11 Roberto Bautista Agut in the Dubai Tennis Championships. He lost to the rising star Aslan Karatsev but took him to three sets.

The Italian has only had to play one match so far in this tournament. He had few problems getting past Hugo Gaston for the loss of just four games.

Khachanov Struggling for Form

Karen Khachanov took on a player with the Christian name Yannick in the second round, now he's up against a Jannick. Khachanov beat Yannick Hanfmann in round two, losing only five games to the big-serving German.

The Russian is currently ranked 22nd in the world, that's nine ahead of his opponent. Last September thoug he was 16th and in the top ten two years ago. He's had a rather inconsistent 2021 to date and has just one win over a top 20 ranked player.

His year began with that run to the semi-finals in Melbourne, where he lost to Sinner. No player in the top 80 was beaten by Khachanov in that tournament. His Australian Open saw him reach the third round before being beaten by another Italian, this time Matteo Berrettini. He lost in straight sets but all went to a tie-break. The bet on one in this match really has to be made.

Since then, Khachanov has made it to the last eight in Rotterdam. That was the tournament in which he beat a top 20 ranked player, beating Stan Wawrinka in one round. After beating Cameron Norrie in straight sets, he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter finals.

Khachanov only had to win one match in Marseille to reach the last eight. He had a day to forget though when being beaten by then world number 287 Matthew Ebden. Dubai saw him lose to the often dangerous Jeremy Chardy but his form isn't that great going into this tournament. Sinner can be a winner, though it might take three sets.
