Sinner a Good Bet to Reach Last Four

Jannik Sinner is seeded 21st for the Miami Open but is in with a good chance of reaching the semi-finals. The Italian takes on Alexander Bublik who is the 32nd seed.

Sinner is having a successful 2021 and already has one tournament victory this calendar year. That came in Melbourne in a warm-up tournament for the Australian Open. He had to win five matches to lift that title and only one went to a third set. His best win in that event was over Karen Khachanov and he also beat him on the way to this quarter final.

His Australian Open campaign didn't last long, losing to Denis Shapovalov in the first round. He did take him to five sets though, another indication of how dangerous the Italian can be. This is his third quarter final since that Grand Slam. He made it to the last eight in both Marseille and Dubai. That included a victory over Roberto Bautista Agut, who he could meet in the Miami semi-final.

This tournament has seen Sinner beat Hugo Gaston in his opening match, his opponent winning just four games. That took the Italian to a match against Karen Khachanov and he had to come from a set down to get past the Russian.

His fourth round match wasn't so difficult. He beat Emil Ruusuvuori for the loss of five games. A good win considering his opponent had beaten third seed Alexander Zverev in the second round. Sinner had never made it past the third round of a Masters event before this tournament. Not a bad performance for his first time in the Miami Open.

Bublik Out for Revenge

World number 44 Alexander Bublik also has little experience of this tournament. It's only his second time here and in 2019 he was beaten by Nick Kyrgios. He's another player who is seeing his ranking rise due to some consistent performances.

The year began for him with a run to the final of the Antalya tournament. A win over top ten ranked Matteo Berrettini took place in that event, will he beat another Italian in Miami? Bublik could well have won that tournament but retired after just two games in his final against Australian Alex de Minaur.

Like his opponent, Bublik didn't have a great Australian Open. He lost in the second round to Dusan Lajovic. His good form soon returned though as he made it to the Singapore final, losing to Alexander Popyrin. A win over Alexander Zverev in Rotterdam was another impressive victory.

Only one set has been dropped on his way to this quarter final. That was in his fourth round match against Taylor Fritz. The first set was lost on a tie-break but he fought back well to take the next two 6-3 6-4.

Now he faces Jannik Sinner and their only previous meeting took place earlier this month. They met in the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Italian won in three sets. Sinner lost the first set and had to win a tie-break to stay in the match. The final set was won 6-2 and Sinner looks a good bet to repeat that victory in this match.
