MATCH PREVIEW

Medvedev to Continue Winning Run

New world number two Daniil Medvedev is the top seed in the Miami Open. He takes on seventh seeded Roberto Bautista Agut in the quarter finals. A win will see the victor up against either Jannik Sinner or Alexander Bublik in the last four.

Medvedev rose to second in the rankings after winning the tournament held in Marseille. That was his first singles title of the year but his second overall in 2021. His year got off to a great start when partnering with Andrey Rublev, Russia won the ATP Cup. Medvedev was in scorching form in that tournament with singles win over three top ten players. He had wins over Matteo Berrettini, Diego Schwartzmann and Alexander Zverev with only one set dropped.

That set him up well for the Australian Open where he made it all the way to the final. Wins included Stefanos Tsitsipas (who he's seeded to meet in the final of this tournament) and Andrey Rublev. No title win though as he lost in straight sets to Novak Djokovic. He returned to the circuit at the start of this month but lost to Dusan Lajovic in Rotterdam in his first match.

Medvedev soon returned to form though and won the Marseille tournament. The highest ranked player he beat in that event was possible semi-final opponen here, Jannik Sinner. He still had problems in the final against Pierre-Hugues Hubert, winning in three sets.

The top seed had never made it past the fourth round of the Miami Open before this year. Medvedev is chasing his fourth Masters title and has only dropped one set on his way to this quarter final. That was in the third round when Alexander Popyrin. He won the first set on a tie-break but the second went to his opponent, also on a tie-break. Medvedev proved the stronger though to get the win. It was easier in the last round as he beat unseeded Frances Tiafoe for the loss of just seven games.

Win Number Three for Agut?

Roberta Bautista Agut is the world number 12 but seeded seventh for this tournament. The Spaniard is in his second straight Miami Open quarter final. His previous appearance was in 2019 (this event wasn't held last year) when losing to John Isner. Agut got his revenge for that loss this week.

It's been a generally good year for Agut with a few disappointments along the way. He only won one of his three matches in the ATP Cup, despite Spain making it to the semi-finals. His Australian Open was a poor one, losing to Radu Albot in the first round. Form improved on his return to Europe. Agut made it to the final in Montpellier. Despite winning the first set, he lost that final to David Goffin.

Another first round exit happened in Rotterdam but he bounced back well in Doha. He had wins over Dominic Thiem and Andrey Rublev but disappointingly lost to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the final. His up and down year saw him lose to Jannik Sinner in the last 16 in Dubai. He might get a chance of revenge in the semi-final if both get that far.

In Miami, Agut had a walkover in his first match with Lloyd Harris withdrawing. Agut had problems in his third round match, dropping the first set to Jan-Lennard Struff. He only lost five games in the next two sets. Then came his return match with John Isner. He won the first set this time but Isner recovered to win the next. Agut finally got through after a third set tie-break.

He has a good record against his opponent winning both their previous meetings. The last was in the Cincinnati Masters in three sets. Medvedev has had the better form this year though and he can get the win.
