MATCH PREVIEW

Ultra-Consistent Rublev Fancied to Reach Final

It's been a highly consistent year for Andrey Rublev. The number four seed is the hot favourite to win the Miami Open final with a win over 26th seeded Hubert Hurkacz.

If Rublev was to win this title, he'd move up to seventh in the rankings. His year has been filled with quarter finals, semi-finals and finals. That all started with him teaming up with Daniil Medvedev to win the ATP Cup for Russia. His partner then went on to beat Rublev in the Australian Open quarter final.

His first singles title of the year came in Rotterdam, where he beat Marton Fucsovics in the final. Earlier in that tournament he'd had wins over both Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andy Murray. This is his third straight semi-final after reaching that stage in both Doha and Dubai. In both those last four appearances, Rublev lost to a player ranked below him. Roberto Bautista Agut (who he could meet in the final of this tournament) beat the Russian in Doha and rising star Aslan Karatsev got the win over him in Dubai.

Rublev had never made it past the third round in Miami before this 2021 event. He beat Tennys Sandgren for the loss of just three games in his second round match (bye in the first round). That set up a match with a very familiar opponent, namely Marton Fucscovics. It was the fourth tournament in a row he'd met him and Rublev recorded a fourth straight win over the 29th seed. Wins over Marin Cilic and Sebastian Korda have followed and he is yet to drop a set in this tournament.

Hurkacz Out to Cause Another Upset

Hubert Hurkacz is the 26th seed in this Miami Open. He's ranked 37th in the world but will be in the top 30 after his efforts in this tournament. If he was to win it, Hurkacz would find himself in the top 16. The Polish player is in his second semi-final of 2021. He's out to win his second tournament of the year after success at the Delray Beach Open in January. He beat Sebastian Korda (who reached the quarter finals here) in the final.

Hurkacz made it to the last eight in Melbourne but didn't get past the first round of the Australian Open. He led Mikael Ymer two sets to one but ended up losing. That was his second successive first round exit in a Grand Slam event. Only two matches were won in the three tournaments leading up to this Miami Open.

His only previous appearance at this tournament was in 2019 (it wasn't held last year) and he lost in the third round. He's had far more success on his second visit. The third round this time saw him beat sixth seed Denis Shapovalov in straight sets. That avenged a loss to the Canadian in the recent Dubai Tennis Championships. The fourth round saw him have to come from a set down to defeat Milos Raonic, the 12th seed.

Hurkacz needed to make another comeback in his quarter final. He went a set down to second seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas but recovered well. He won the next two sets for the loss of just seven games to reach his first Miami Open semi-final. Now he faces an in-form Andrey Rublev. The pair have only met once before with Hurkacz getting the win last year on clay in Rome. Rublev is yet to drop a set in Miami, he can keep that record up in this match and make another final.
