MATCH PREVIEW

Ruud on the Rise

Casper Ruud is continuing his climb up the world rankings. He's up to 16 in the live list and a semi-final win over Matteo Berrettini will see him rise even higher.

The Norwegian was ranked 36th this time last year but the 22-year-old has become a very consistent player this year. That's shown by the fact he will be in the top ten in the ATP Race, based on points earned this year. He reached the quarter finals in Acapulco, losing to Alexander Zverev (a possible opponent in the final of this Madrid Open) and on clay in Marabell. Since then, Ruud has reached the last four in the Monte Carlo Masters, Munich and now in this tournament.

He is certainly having a great time on clay and building on his tournament win on this surface in Argentina last year. Some good scalps have been claimed in recent weeks. Ruud has had wins over Diego Schwartzmann, Pablo Carreno Busta and Fabio Fognini.

This week has seen him in top form and he's claimed his biggest win of an impressive year. He'd already beaten the 15th seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round. Fancy drawing Ruud in round one, now that's a nightmare draw. The third round saw him get his biggest win of the year as he defeated fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. That took him into a quarter final against Alexander Bublik losing just six games (five of them in the first set).

Although his opponent is the eighth seed, Ruud will be confident of beating him. They have had three previous meetings in the past couple of years and he's won two of them. More importantly, both his wins were on clay with victories in the 2019 French Open and in the quarter finals in Rome last year.

A Second Final for Berrettini?

Matteo Berrettini has been ranked tenth for the past seven months. He's due to rise to ninth after this run to the semi-finals of the Madrid Open. The Italian is chasing his second straight tournament victory after his recent win in Belgrade. That was his fourth ATP Tour title and three of them have come on clay.

Berrettini didn't beat anyone ranked higher than 28th in Belgrade. He did beat rising star Aslan Karatsev in the final though and that showed he's in good form. His year began in the ATP Cup and he took Italy to the final, before losing to Russia. The last 16 of the Australian Open was reached but he had to withdraw due to abdominal pain.

The Italian was off court until April when the clay court season began. He lost his first match in Monte Carlo to Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina but has been making great strides since then.

In this tournament, he has beaten his compatriot Fabio Fognini, Frederico Delbonis and in the quarter final, the 16th seeded Cristian Garin. The latter match saw him drop his first set of the week. He fought back well though winning the next two 6-3 6-0.  This is going to be another tough task for the Italian. Ruud is in top form and beating high ranked players. You should back Ruud to win this match, though it may take three sets to do so.
