MATCH PREVIEW

Last Eight Beckons for Tsitsipas

After a tough match against John Isner in round three, fifth seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Pablo Carreno Busta for a place in the last eight. The winner of this match takes on either Daniil Medvedev or Cristian Garin and it is the Greek player who is the favourite to knock out the 12th seeded Spaniard.

Tsitsipas has reached the semi-finals in each of his last two Grand Slam events. 2020 saw him get to the last four in this tournament, losing to Novak Djokovic in five sets. He followed that up with a run to the semi-finals in the 2021 Australian Open. He beat Rafael Nadal down under but then lost in straight sets to Daniil Medvedev, so it could be revenge time in the next round.

The Greek has had a busy 2021 playing in 11 tournaments and winning 33 out of 41 matches prior to this event. He's earned more ranking points than any other player on the circuit and in the overall rankings, he's closing in on the fourth place currently held by Dominic Thiem. Making the last four can see him climb above the out-of-form Austrian.

Tsitsipas has been ultra-consistent this year with two title wins, two losses in finals, two semi-finals and three last eight exits. At one stage he went seven events in a row where he made it to at least the last eight. Both of his title wins this year have come on clay. He won the Monte Carlo Masters and then in his final tournament before the French Open, he won in Lyon.

This tournament has seen the 22-year-old beat Jeremy Chardy and Pedro Martinez in straight sets and John Isner in four. He had to come from a set down to get past Isner in a match that took just over two and a half hours to win.

Busta Not at his Best Yet

29-year-old Pablo Carreno Busta has made it to the last eight of the French Open on two previous occasions. The last of those was in 2020 losing to Novak Djokovic. He was also a US Open semi-finalist last year but could only get to the third round in this year's Australian Open. He is ranked 12th in the world (still only number three in Spain) and 19th in terms of ranking points earned this year.

Busta has already won one clay court tournament this year. That victory came in Marbella where he defeated Jaume Munar in the final. No players in the top 45 were beaten to win that ATP 250 tournament. He beat Karen Khachanov in Monte Carlo, before losing to Casper Ruud in the last 16.

He had more success in Barcelona making it all the way to the last four. There he lost in straight sets to Rafael Nadal but had beaten Diego Schwartzmann before that. His form dipped after that, failing to get to the last 16 in both Madrid and Rome. It's not been too easy a tournament for Busta. He had a first round win over Norbert Gombos in straight sets but had a more difficult time in round two. Busta had to come from a set down to defeat wild card Enzo Couacard, but then beat Steve Johnson in round three for the loss of only eight games.

He's had two previous matches against Tsitsipas and lost both of them. The first may be significant as it was on clay and Tsitsipas won that in Barcelona, beating his opponent in straight sets. Another defeat for the Spaniard looks on the cards here. Back Tsitsipas to win, most likely in straight sets.
