MATCH PREVIEW

Now It Gets Really Tough for Medvedev

While it has been an entertaining French Open, it's lacked a real blockbuster match. As we go into the last eight, those kind of matches are on their way. It starts with this match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev. This is in the bottom half of the draw and the winner faces either Alexander Zverev or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Daniil Medvedev is the second seed at Roland Garros but that's based on his world ranking. Before this year he'd never won a match at Roland Garros. That's all changed for the Russian who could yet end this tournament as the world number one. He may have started getting some wins in Paris but convincing us that he can beat the likes of Tsitsipas and Zverev to get to the final hasn't happened yet.

Medvedev didn't have the best of warm-ups for Roland Garros. Only one of his three matches was won and that was against Fokina, who he could meet for a place in the final. His losses came against Aslan Karatsev and Cristian Garin, two of only five losses he has had this calendar year.

This week finally saw that maiden win at Roland Garros. The 25-year-old beat Andrey Bublik in straight sets for his second win of the year on clay. That's something he's only ever managed to do once before. The only other time was in 2019 when losing in the semi-final in Monte Carlo. He beat Novak Djokovic and a certain Stefanos Tsitisipas that week, so he can mix it with the best on this surface.

Other wins this week have come against Tommy Paul, Reilly Opelka and a revenge win over Cristian Garin with only Paul taking a set off him. Medvedev has won six of his previous seven matches against Tsitsipas. The most recent being his win over the Greek player in the semi-final of this year's Australian Open.

Tsitsipas So Strong on Clay

The only win for Tsitisipas over Medvedev was in last year's ATP Tour Finals. The loss to Medvedev in Monte Carlo is the only time that the pair have met on clay. Tsitsipas (seeded fifth here) has fond memories of Monte Carlo. Not just because he lives there but this year saw him win the Monte Carlo Masters.

It's been a big year for the Greek with more ranking points earned than any other player on the circuit. A win in this match will see him overtake the out-of-form Dominic Thiem and move up to fourth in the rankings. Tsitsipas had a 33-8 record for 2021 before arriving at Roland Garros.

He also won in Lyon and has lost in two finals this year. Add on three last eight appearances (now four) and two semi-finals and Tsitsipas has been so consistent on the road to Roland Garros. His two title wins have both come on clay so he has to be the favourite to get past Mededev. His French Open record is strong with a fourth round in 2019 and a five-set semi-final loss to Novak Djokovic last year.

He's only lost one set on the way to the last eight. That was in the third round when dropping a set to John Isner. His other wins have come against Jeremy Chardy, Pedro Martinez and Pablo Correna Busta. Back Tsitsipas to get the win over Medvedev and it may well be in straight sets.
