Nadal Just Keeps on Winning

Winning  a fifth straight French Open title is still on the cards for Rafael Nadal. He takes on Jannik Sinner in the fourth round and if winning, then a quarter final against either Diego Schwartzmann or Jan-Lennard Struff is on the agenda for the Portuguese legend.

Nadal has won this title on 13 occasions and a win this year will be his 21st in Grand Slam events. That will see him holding the record for most Grand Slam titles be his on his own. At present he's sharing that record with Roger Federer. You have to go back to 2015 for the last time Nadal stepped onto a court at Roland Garros and lose a match. His previous defeat before that was 2009, that shows the domination he's had in the French Open.

This year has seen Nadal win clay court titles in Rome and Barcelona but there have been defeats. Andrey Rublev beat Nadal in Monte Carlo and Alexander Zverev got a win over him in Madrid, a loss avenged in Rome. With wins over Djokovic, Zverev and Tsitsipas, he has again proved his dominance on a clay court.

Nadal didn't drop a set when winning the French Open last year and is on course to do again in 2021. Three matches have been played against Alexei Popyrin, Richard Gasquet and Cameron Norrie, all in straight sets. This is his third match against Sinner and the previous two have both been on clay. Nadal beat Sinner in the 2020 French Open quarter final last year, and then again in Rome this year. Both victories came in straight sets, though they haven't been walkovers. There's been a tie-break and a 7-5, so Nadal may have a bit of a fight on his hands here.

The Young Pretender

Jannik Sinner is the world number 19 and 11th in the Race to Turin. He's also top of the rankings in the Race to Milan for the NEXTGEN tournament for younger players,  a title he won two years ago. Sinner began the year number 36 in the world, so he's been making a fair bit of progress this year.

Tennis is looking for new players to replace the big three and Sinner is high on that list. 2021 began with him winning an ATP 250 tournament in Melbourne. He lost in the first round of the Australian Open to Denis Shapovalov but did take his opponent to five sets. The last eight was reached in both Marseille and Dubai before a run to the final in Miami.

The highlight of his clay court season took place in Barcelona where he made it to the semi-finals. On his way to the last four, he beat Roberto Bautista Agut (for the third time in four tournaments) and Andrey Rublev before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas. His form dipped a little bit after that including losses to Alexei Popyrin and Arthur Rinderkneck, whose combined world ranking is over the 200 mark.

Sinner has found his form again at Roland Garros on only his second time in the French Open. Last year, he reached the last eight losing to Nadal but beating Zverev and Goffin on the way. He had a battle in the first round this year having to come from two sets to one down to get past Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Round two saw the 18th seeded Sinner beat Gianluca Mager in four sets. It was easier for him in the third round as he beat Mikael Ymer in straight sets. Sinner will give Nadal a few problems but another straight sets win for the defending champion looks likely here.
