MATCH PREVIEW

Djokovic Hoping for Easier Match after Musetti Scare

Thankfully for Novk Djokovic, his match against Lorenzo Musetti wasn't best of three sets. The number one seed fought back to beat his young opponent and now has another Italian to face. Djokovic takes on ninth seeded Matteo Berrettini, with the winner up against either Rafael Nadal or Diego Schwartzmann in the last four.

We are all hoping it's going to be Djokovic v Nadal in the semi-final and the chances are that's just what we'll get. It wasn't looking good for Djokovic in his fourth round match against Musetti. His opponent won the first two sets and was outplaying the world number one. Then came stomach and back problems for the Italian and the tide was turned, with him eventually retiring in the final set.

Novak Djokovic has only won the Roland Garros title on one occasion. That was back in 2016 and he's lost in four finals. The most recent of those final defeats was last year when Nadal beat him in straight sets for the loss of only seven games. The world number one has already won the Australian Open this year.  A win at Roland Garros would take him halfway towards winning all four Grand Slams in one year.

Since winning down under, Djokovic hasn't had the best of form. He lost in the last 16 in Monte Carlo, being beaten in straight sets by Daniel Evans. The semi-finals were reached in Belgrade but no top 40 players were beaten and he lost to Aslan Karatsev (who he beat in the Australian Open semi-finals).

Djokovic finally got back to somewhere near his best in the Rome Masters. He beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last eight but despite taking the first set, lost to Nadal in the final. His second title of the year came in Belgrade. It was only an ATP 250 tournament though and he beat Alex Molcan in the final, who was ranked 255th at the time.

The top seed didn't drop a set before the near-disaster against Musetti. He's only had one previous match against Matteo Berrettini. That was at the Tour Finals event on a hard court. Djokovic won that match for the loss of just three games. A match like that would be good for Djokovic after what happened on Monday.

First Time in Last Eight for Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini is the world number nine but would need to win this tournament to overtake Roger Federer in eighth. In the ATP Race (points earned this year), he's up to seventh so he could well again make it to the ATP Tour Finals, which this year are being held in Italy. Berrettini has made it to the last eight of a Grand Slam for only the second time in his career. His best ever performance was reaching the last four in the 2019 US Open, losing to Rafael Nadal.

Berrettini made a good start to the year helping Italy to the ATP Cup final, where they lost to Russia. He had wins over Dominic Thiem, Gael Monfils and Roberto Bautista Agut in that tournament. He reached the last 16 of the Australian Open but an abdominal problem caused him to withdraw from his scheduled match against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

That injury kept Berrettini off court until April and the start of the European clay court season. He won the first of the two Belgrade tournaments with a win over Aslan Karatsev in the final. His good form continued as he got to the final of the Madrid Open, losing to Alexander Zverev, despite winning the first set. His final tournament before Roland Garros was the Rome Masters, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets.

Before this year, Berrettini had never made it past the third round at Roland Garros. He only dropped one set in the first three rounds and then received a walkover in round four after Roger Federer withdrew from the tournament. Berrettini hasn't got a great record against top ten players, only that win over Thiem this year. Back Djokovic to win this match, possibly in straight sets.
