MATCH PREVIEW

First Final But for Who?

While the women's draw has seen all the potential top match-ups disappear, the men's draw is faring better. Fifth seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas take on Alexander Zverev (seeded one place below him) in the semi-final with both looking to make it to their first final at Roland Garros. A win for Zverev will take him above Tsitsipas in the world rankings.

Alexander Zverev is looking to win his second clay court title of 2021. He won the Madrid Open and beat three top ten players that week. Wins came against Rafael Nadal (who avenged that win in Rome), Dominic Thiem and then Matteo Berrettini in the final. It was his second title of the year having previously won in Acapulco, where it was Stefanos Tsitsipas that he defeated in the final. That wasn't on clay though.

The German is in his first semi-final at Roland Garros. He's been in the last eight on two previous occasions but has finally made it to the last four. Only one Grand Slam final has been reached by Zverev. That was the 2020 US Open final where he lost to Dominic Thiem. This tournament nearly came to an early end for Zverev. He went two sets down to Oscar Otte in round one before making a successful comeback.

Since that escape, wins have come against Roman Safiullen, Laslo Dere, Kei Nishikori and in the last round, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina losing only six games. He may have beaten Tsitsipas in Acapulco but Zverev trails him 5-2 in previous meetings. They first met in 2018 with Zverev getting the win but then Tsitsipas won five in a row. The only match on clay was two years ago in Madrid with Tsitsipas winning in three sets.

Mr Consistency

Stefanos Tsitsipas has earned more ranking points than any other player this year. His opponent is third on that list, so we have two players who have both had highly successful years. Winning a Grand Slam would be the icing on the cake though. Tsitsipas will climb to fourth in the overall world rankings as a result of his efforts at Roland Garros.

This is his 46th match of the year, he's been successful in 38 of them. He has won titles this year in Lyon and Monte Carlo, both being clay court tournaments. Two finals have been lost and three semi-finals reached, if he's in a tournament booking the hotel for the week is essential. This is the second year in a row that he has made it to the last four at Roland Garros, losing a five-setter to Novak Djokovic.

He has had wins over Jeremy Chardy, Pedro Martinez, John Isner (who is the only player so far to take a set off him), Pablo Carreno Busta and second seeeded Daniil Medvedev. Could it be a Greek double this year with Maria Sakkari in the women's singles semi-finals?  Tsitsipas is in top form and can be backed to get the win over Zverev, possibly in four sets.
