MATCH PREVIEW

Good Route to Last Eight for Zverev

The draw is working out well for sixth seeded Alexander Zverev. He has no seeded players standing between him and a place in the semi-finals of the 2021 French Open. Kei Nishikori won't be an easy opponent to defeat though. The winner of this match has a last eight match against either Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Frederico Delbonis awaiting them.

Zverev is close behind Stefanos Tsitsipas in the world rankings. He may face the Greek in the last four and a move up to fifth in the rankings is possible this week. In terms of ranking points earned this year, Zverev is in fourth place with 2,250 points from nine tournaments played in 2021.

He's won two titles this year, the first coming in Acapulco, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. His biggest win came on clay when winning the Madrid Open.He beat both Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem before defeating Matteo Berrettini in the final. That was followed up by a last eight appearance in Rome where Nadal got his revenge. In his second match, Zverev had to face Kei Nishikori and had to come from a set down to win that match. The pair also met in the last 32 in Madrid with a straight sets win for the German. He's now won four of his five matches against Nishikori, the only loss being on clay three years ago.

Zverev has made the last eight at Roland Garros on two previous occasions, the most recent being in 2019. Last year saw him beaten in the fourth round, the only time in his last four Grand Slam events that he's failed to get to at least the quarter finals. This year nearly saw him knocked out in the first round of the French Open. He went two sets down to Oscar Otte before winning the next three and dropping just four games. Round two saw Zverev defeat Roman Safiullin in straight sets. That was followed by a victory over unseeded Laslo Dere for the loss of nine games.

Nishikori Still a Threat

Kei Nishikori is a former world number four but that was six years ago. He's now down at 49th in the rankings, eight places lower than he was at the start of the year. For ranking points earned in 2021, Nishikori is 43rd and coming into this tournament had a record of ten wins and ten defeats.

The 31-year-old had to battle his way back up the rankings after a series of injuries forced him off the circuit. Nishikori has made it to the quarter final at Roland Garros on three previous occasions, most recently in 2019. Last year saw him lose in the second round to Stefano Travaglia but he'd beaten 32nd seeded Daniel Evans in his opening match.

This year has seen him reach the last eight in Rotterdam and Dubai (beating David Goffin). On clay he took a set off Rafael Nadal in Barcelona and have wins over Fabio Fognini and Karen Khachanov. He remains a difficult player to beat and has also taken sets off Stefanos Tsitsipas and Diego Schwartzmann. Keeping up the good work throughout a match isn't that regular an occurrence though. Zverev can get the win here, but don't be surprised if Nishikori can get a set off him.
