MATCH PREVIEW

Big Showdown in Barcelona

Rafael Nadal bids to win a 13th Barcelona Open on Sunday. The number one seed faces Stefanos Tsitsipas in what should be a great and informative final.

Nadal first won this title in 2005 and such has been his dominance, his win in 2013 was his eighth title here. The only year in that period in which he didn't win this tournament was in 2010 when withdrawing due to fatigue. Three more titles have been won since then, the last in 2018.

The Spaniard had a surprise loss to Andrey Rublev in last week's Monte Carlo Masters. That was only his second tournament of this year, so not much chance of him withrawing due to fatigue this year. His only other tournament in 2021 has been the Australian Open, where he was beaten in the last eight by a certain Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Nadal has dropped down to third in the world rankings. A win in this final will see him claim second place back from Daniil Medvedev. He made a shaky start to this tournament needing three sets to get past qualifer Ilya Ivashka. He had to come from a set down to beat the world number 111.

More problems came in the third round as he again had a three-setter. That didn't look likely when winning the first set against Kei Nishikori (twice winner here) 6-0. The Japanese player won the second set but Nadal won the third 6-2. He had an easier time in the quarter final dropping just five games against Cameron Norrie. He repeated that feat in the last four when defeating Pablo Carreno Busta.

The Spaniard has won six of his previous eight matches against Tsitsipas. Their first ever meeting was in the final of this event three years ago. Nadal won that one 6-2 6-1, he'll do well to win by that score in this final. Two more wins were earned before Tsitsipas finally beat Nadal with a win at the Madrid Open two years ago. Nadal beat Tsitsipas in Rome soon after and leads 2-1 on clay. The most recent win of course for Tsitsipas was his comeback from two sets down to beat Nadal in the Australian Open.

Another Title for Tsitsipas?

Stefanos Tsitsipas will be a major threat to Rafael Nadal in this final. This is his second clay tournament of the year and he's won all nine of his matches so far. Not just that, he's won all 17 of the sets he's had to play. My maths are ok by the way, his match against Alejandro Davodich Fokina only lasted one set before his opponent retired.

Tsitsipas has won 26 singles matches this year and that equals the number won by Andrey Rublev. He's been in consistent form all year. He has reached the quarter finals in every event he's played with two semi-finals and now his third final of the year. Last week saw him win his first Masters event with victory in Monte Carlo. He has to be on anyone's shortist to end the reign of Rafael Nadal in Paris.

Just how he gets on against the Spaniard in this final is going to be very interesting indeed. He knows that he can beat Nadal on clay and is probably in better form than him at present. This week has seen him get wins over Jaume Munar, Alex de Minaur, Felix Auger-Aliassime and the in-form Jannik Sinner. Four wins and only 22 games lost. He's in the form to beat Nadal and can be backed to do so. It might take him three sets though.
