MATCH PREVIEW

Tsitsipas Going for the Double

These two players have been so consistent in 2021 and meet in the semi-final of the Barcelona Open. Stefanos Tsitispas is fresh from winning the Monte Carlo Masters last weekend. He takes on rising star Jannik Sinner in this semi-final.

Tsitsipas had a routine straight sets win over Felix Auger-Aliassime in Friday's quarter final. He won both sets by a 6-3 6-3 scoreline and never looked in any real trouble. The Greek player is become the model of consistency as this is his fifth last four appearance of the year and it's not even May yet.

In the ATP Tour Race, Tsitisipas is top and he's looking nailed on to be in the lucrative tour finals in Turin at the end of the year. As for the world rankings, every win he gets is taking him closer to Dominic Thiem.  It's also making his chances of landing a first Grand Slam this year pretty good.

Last week saw him win his first ever Masters tournament, winning a Grand Slam is the next step. A possible final against Rafael Nadal would be an interesting French Open preview.

The win in Monte Carlo (where he now resides) is his only tournament win of the year. The chances of him making it two are good and he is yet to lose a set this week. He didn't lose one in Monte Carlo either, showing just what good form he is in. Before his win over Auger-Aliassime, Tsitsipas had beaten Jaume Munar and Alex de Minaur.

Sinner in Top Form

Jannik Sinner was as low as 81st in the world rankings last year. The 19-year-old has made great progress in the past 12 months and particularly this year. He won a tournament in Melbourne at the start of the year and is now only two wins away from a much larger trophy triumph.

He's had two previous matches against Stefanos Tsitsipas. They are a good form guide as both were played on clay and the players are level at 1-1. Both were played in Rome with the Greek player getting a straight sets win in 2019. Last year though, it was Sinner who got a three-set victory, dropping the middle set on a tie-break. He only dropped three games in the two sets that he won.

Sinner began this week ranked 19th in the world but will rise one further place in the next list. A win over Tsitsipas would see him go up to 16th. He's also doing well in the ATP Tour Race, currently seventh and top in the NextGen race. He's a previous winner of the NextGen under-21 tournament but he's already proved he can mix it with the top players in the world, whatever their age.

That was shown on Friday when he beat Andrey Rublev in straight sets. Rublev has had a highly consistent year and lost in the Monte Carlo final last Sunday. This is the second final that Sinner has reached in recent weeks. He also made it to the final in Miami, losing to Hubert Hurkacz.

The win over Rublev was preceded by him beating fifth seeded Roberto Bautista Agut. He is bound to put up another brave performance against Tsitsipas. The fact he has beaten his opponent on clay will boost his confidence. Tsitsipas is in top form though and he can get the win here.

That will take him through to a final against either Rafael Nadal or Pablo Carreno Busta. Nadal is chasing his 12th title in Barcelona, but the first since 2018. He's lost two sets in this tournament so far. Whoever wins this semi-final might fancy their chances of beating the King of Clay who lost in Monte Carlo last week. Busta is the other possible opponent and the sixth seed has only dropped one set to date.
