MATCH PREVIEW

Another Week, Another Quarter Final for Rublev

This Barcelona Open quarter final sees two consistent players facing each other. Andrey Rublev is the third seed and he takes on 11th seeded Jannik Sinner.

Rublev rose to seventh in the world rankings this week. That followed his run to the final of the Monte Carlo Masters last week. Reaching the final in Barcelona would see him climb above Alexander Zverev into sixth. In terms of points earned this year, he's second to Stefanos Tsitsipas who beat him in that Monte Carlo final. He received a wild card to enter this tournament looking for another good run.

The Russian seems to have forgotten what it's like to lose early on in a tournament. A win over his Italian opponent will see him in his sixth straight semi-final in singles events. His worst performance of the year has been losing in the last eight of the Australian Open to Daniil Medvedev. Just before that Grand Slam, Rublev had teamed up with Medvedev to win the ATP Cup.

Despite all his semi-finals, Rublev has only won once in Rotterdam. Three of his last four defeats have been inflicted on him by players ranked outside the top ten. That includes being beaten by Hubert Hurkacz and Aslan Karatsev.

This week has seen him defeat lucky loser Frederico Gaio and then Albert Ramos Vinolas. The latter saw him have to go to three sets to get the win. He won the first set, dropped the second on a tie-break before winning the final one 6-4.

Sinner Climbing the Rankings

Jannik Sinner has only had one previous match against Andrey Rublev. That was in Vienna last year and there's not too much to report. Rublev led 2-1 in the first set when Sinner retired. The two players have been described as look-alikes and there is a bit of a resemblance between them. Not just in looks but in the way they are steadily making their way up the rankings. Sinner has climbed to 19th in the world rankings and this time last year was 73rd and as low as 81st later in the year. He can rise another place if winning this match.

The 19-year-old is way clear at the top of the Race to Milan rankings. That's for the NextGen tournament for under-21s, a tournament he won two years ago. However, he may have larger fish to fry. Going into this tournament he's seventh in the list for the ATP Tour Finals. That's down to winning a tournament in Melbourne and reaching the final of the Miami Masters.

Last year he reached the quarter finals of the French Open so he's definitely a threat on clay. His only clay tournament of the year before this event  was in Monte Carlo last week. He beat Albert Ramos Vinolas (who took Rublev to three sets this week) in straight sets but then lost to Novak Djokovic.

He's been in good form this week and opened with a win over Egor Gerasimov on straight sets. Round three saw him defeat fifth seeded Roberto Bautista Agut, again without losing a set. This looks like being a tight match and could well go to three sets. Slight preference is for Rublev but Sinner will make life very difficult for the Russian. Some form of handicap bet on the Italian may well be a winner and a tie-break is definitely a possibility.
