MATCH PREVIEW

Tsitsipas Still in Top Form

No player has earned more ranking points this year than Stefanos Tsitsipas. His first seven tournaments of 2021 have produced 2,540 points for the Greek, putting him just above Andrey Rublev. Now he takes on Felix Auger-Aliassime for a place in the last four of the Barcelona Open.

Tsitsipas is ranked fifth in the world just behind Dominic Thiem. A second tournament win in as many weeks would close the gap between him and Thiem to just 185 points. Last week saw Tsitsipas win the Monte Carlo Masters beating Andrey Rublev in the final. That was his first tournament victory of the year. A win in this quarter final will take him into his fifth semi-final of the year, hence all those ranking points he's racked up in 2021.

This week has seen him continue the excellent form shown in Monte Carlo. He won that tournament without dropping a set and is yet to lose one in Barcelona. Round two saw him defeat Jaume Munar for the loss of just two games. That took him into a third round match against Alex de Minaur and he won that one 7-5 6-3.

This is his sixth match against Felix Auger-Aliassime. He lost the first two of them in 2019 without winning a set. Since then though he's won three in a row. Last year saw the pair contest the final in Marseille with Tsitsipas winning 6-3 6-4. The most recent win was in the Mexican Open this year, where Tsitsipas won in three sets, dropping the middle one. This is their first meeting on clay.

Auger-Aliassime Out for Revenge

Auger-Aliassime is ranked 20th in the world and that's exactly where he was this time last year. His year got off to a good start when losing in the final of a Melbourne tournament to Daniel Evans. His good form continued with a run to the last 16 of the Australian Open. He knocked out Denis Shapovalov before losing in five sets to Aslan Karatsev. A bit disappointing after winning the first two sets for the loss of just four games.

His form has dipped a bit since then, though he did get to the last eight in Mexico where he lost to Tsitsipas. His only clay tournament of the year was in Monte Carlo last week. He lost in the first round in straight sets to Cristian Garin. The first set went to a tie-break but then he only won one game in the second.

He's reached two ATP Tour finals on clay, both lost two years ago. Before that he had won four clay court tournaments on the Challenger circuit. This week has seen good form on clay, though he got off to a shaky start in the second round. He had to come from a set down to beat Lorenzo Musetti. Much better form in round three though as he got another win over Denis Shapovalov beating him in straight sets. This is tougher though and the in-form Tsitsipas can get the win to set up a semi-final against either Jannik Sinner or Andrey Rublev.
