MATCH PREVIEW

Hammers Look to Continue Good Start

Both West Ham United and Leicester City won their opening Premier League games. They now have a long wait until Monday for the chance to make it two wins in a row. United had a good win at Newcastle, while Leicester City kicked their new season off with a home victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

West Ham don't always make a good start to the season. 2020/21 saw them begin with two straight losses but this time they got off the mark right away. Last season actually began with a home loss to Newcastle, this time they reversed that result with a 4-2 away win. It didn't always look like that was going to be the case. The Hammers went 1-0 and 2-1 down but then turned it around completely.

Three goals were scored in 13 minutes to give West Ham the three points. Four different scorers for them in that game and that's good news. Nothing cheers a player up more than scoring their first goal of the season. It makes life a bit more difficult when going for an anytime goal scorer but Mikhail Antonio always looks a good selection.

West Ham keeping a clean sheet isn't one though. They only have one in their last 12 Premier League games. Both teams have scored in three of their last four league fixtures. West Ham games do tend to see a fair few goals scored, with seven of the last ten have over 2.5 goals scored in them. Last season saw this fixture end up in a 3-2 win for West Ham. They went 3-0 up before City pulled two goals back.  Only Manchester City earned more home points than West Ham in the 2020/21 season.  They won ten home league fixtures but lost two of the last three and that cost them a Champions League place.

City Strong on the Road

It's already been a successful season for Leicester City. They beat Manchester City 1-0 to add the Community Shield to the FA Cup they won last season. They have been busy in the transfer market this summer. City can't go out and make superstar signings but they have the knack of finding players that improve their team. Striker Patson Daka has been signed from Leipzig but was on the subs bench last week. Boubakary Soumare has arrived from French champions Lille and did come on as sub last weekend. So did Jannik Vestergaard, another good signing from Southampton.

All these signings will be needed for their Europa League campaign. As with their opponents though, it could easily have been the Champions League they could have been playing in. Just four points from their last five games cost City a place in the top four. The win over Wolves was a good start for them. Poor home form cost them dearly last season but they won 11 away league games last season.

City have only lost two of their last 14 away league games, the 3-2 loss at West Ham and a defeat at Chelsea. They have scored in 13 of those last 14 away Premier League fixtures, only failing to score in a goalless draw at Wolves. Keeping away clean sheets is a strong point of theirs though and the last seven in the Premier League has seen both teams score. Four of the last five  have had over 2.5 goals scored. Bets on both those markets look good ones to make as does an anytime scorer bet on Jamie Vardy. A bet on a draw with both teams scoring looks a likely winner.
