City Begin Bid to Retain Premier League Title
The new English Premier League season begins with champions Manchester City away at Tottenham. City won the title by 12 points last season. It could have been more but the foot came off the pedal once the title was won. That was the third title win in four seasons but since they began winning championships, only once have they managed to win it again the following season.
Last season ended with disappointment for City when they lost to Chelsea in the Champions League final. Winning that title probably means more to their owners than another domestic triumph. As if they needed to, City have again strengthened their team. Jack Grealish has joined for £100m, now it remains to be seen if they can sign Harry Kane from Tottenham.
If they do, then it's going to be an almighty job for any club to finish above them in the Premier League. A look at their line-up and the players they can put on the bench is almost a reminder for you to check your Fantasy Football team. It's the fact they can change their starting line-up so much and still put out an incredibly strong team that keeps winning them titles.
Last season saw City win 14 of their 19 away Premier League matches. Just two games were lost and in one of those (at Brighton) they led 2-0. City only scored 83 league goals last season. Aguero has gone but he barely played anyway last season. Seven players scored at least six league goals, add a player like Kane to that line-up and heaven knows what City could achieve.
New Start for Tottenham
Another season and a new manager for Tottenham. Nuno Espirito Santo is the new man in charge and surprisingly there hasn't been a glut of Portuguese signings. That was the case at Wolves where he took them from the Championship to the last eight of the Europa League. Cristian Romero has joined from Atalanta for £47m and also taken on loan from the Serie A side is Pierluigi Gollini. Bryan Gil from Seville has also been signed for £21m.
Will the signings persuade Harry Kane to stay at Tottenham? Santo seems to have a tough job on his hands trying to keep the England captain at the club. Will he play in this game though? Just imagine if he did and scored (he's always a good anytime scorer bet) the winner against City and still ended up joining them!
Tottenham made a bright start to the 2020/21 season but as they often do, faded away. They finished in seventh earning themselves a spot in the Europa Conference League (not a big selling point as they try to keep Kane). Tottenham ended 24 points behind City but only five off fourth spot.
Ten home league games were won by Tottenham last season but six were lost. Losing four of their last ten at home was one major reason for their inability to get into the Champions League. There's no Gareth Bale this season, one of three Tottenham players to get into double figures for Premier League goals last season. If Kane does go, then the pressure on Son will grow even higher.
Tottenham have won their last three home games against City. They lost the last two played in the 2020/21 season though. A win for City with both teams scoring looks the one to place.
