Tough Times for the Posh
It's not been a good return to the Championship for Peterborough United. They begin the weekend one from bottom in the table and host 10th placed Birmingham City. If the Posh have one target this weekend, it will be to improve their defending after already conceding 17 league goals this season.
Last season saw them finish second in League One and return to the Championship for the first time since 2012/13. It wasn't the happiest of returns though as their first game of the season saw them lose 3-0 at Luton Town. An early sign of the leaky defence that has caused them so many problems this term.
They won their second game though and in dramatic fashion. At home to Derby County, they were a goal down going into the 91st minute. Then they got back level and scored a 99th minute goal for the winner. That's their only league win of the season though. It did look as if they might win their next game but gave away a 2-0 lead against Cardiff. Those late winners do come back to bite you as Cardiff scored in the 95th minute to deny Peterborough a win.
It's all gone downhill since then with four successive defeats in the Championship. That's left them with only Notts Forest below them but only a point from safety. They lost 1-0 at Preston and then that late goal situation happened again. A 94th minute goal gave West Brom a win over Peterborough.
The last two fixtures haven't been so close though. Peterborough lost 6-2 at Sheffield United (conceding the final goal in the 92nd minute). That was a poor defeat against a side who have only scored three goals in their other six league matches. Their most recent defeat was a 3-1 defeat at Reading. The last goal was conceded in the 88th minute but a bet on a goal after the 76th minute is worth making. Four of the last six Peterborough league games have seen both teams score, that's another market to bet on. An anytime goalscorer bet on Harrison Burrows could also make a profit.
Promising Start by Birmingham
Birmingham City are only two points behind the final promotion play-off position. They needed a six-game unbeaten run to get them out of relegation trouble last season. City still managed to concede nine goals in their last two games but were safe by that stage. This season has seen them make a promising start to their campaign.
They kept two clean sheets as they won at Sheffield United and then drew at home with Stoke City. Their unbeaten run ended when losing 2-0 at home to Bournemouth. When you lose your first league game of the season, you need to bounce back right away. That's just what Birmingham did as they went to Luton Town and won 5-0 with two goals from Scott Hogan.
After a draw at Barnsley, Hogan was on target again as City beat Derby 2-0. It wasn't so good in midweek as they lost 4-1 at home to Fulham, with Troy Deeney scoring their only goal. Only one of their last seven away league games have been lost. Three of the last five have seen both teams score and that looks a good bet to make for this game with between them, these two teams scoring and conceding 17. Who'll win? With the way Peterborough defend, an away win looks likely.
