Albion in Deep Trouble
There are games that you need to win and dare not lose. That was the case when West Bromwich Albion traveled to Fulham on Monday. They lost the game 2-0 and now have the problem of coping with the attack of third placed Tottenham Hotspur.
That loss to their relegation rivals saw Albion drop to 18th place in the Premier League. They are still searching for their first win since winning promotion and have just three points from their seven games. Avoiding an immediate return to the Championship is already looking an almighty difficult task for the Baggies.
Just scoring is a problem for them at present. The last four league games have seen them get on the scoresheet just once. They can score goals though, because five had been hit against Everton and Chelsea. How different their season might have been if they'd kept that 3-0 home lead against Chelsea. Perhaps Slovan Bilic and Jose Mourinho will have a pre-match chat about giving away such leads.
It's their defending that is the biggest problem though. 16 goals have been conceded in the Premier League, even more than Liverpool have let in. With a record like that, you really don't want to see Son (who's scored more league goals this season than West Brom) and Kane (who's level with them) in town. Even worse, Gareth Bale might get on the pitch too.
Tottenham in Contention for the Title?
Those who claimed watching Tottenham Hotspur was a bit boring with Jose Mourinho as boss have been proved wrong this season. His team start the weekend in third place, just two points behind leaders Liverpool. If that 3-0 home lead over West Ham United hadn't been lost, they would be sitting at the top of the table.
Can they be title contenders this season? If they can cut out the defensive errors, then that's a possibiility. They certainly aren't having any problems up front. They've scored 18 goals in their seven league games, 14 of which have come from Son and Kane. Keeping them fit this season is imperative if they are to get into title contention.
Away form is often a problem for Tottenham but not so far this season. They have a 100% record and have already scored 12 goals with just three conceded. That's extended their unbeaten away run in the Premier League to five matches. Continuing this kind of form on the road is vital for them.
Up against the fragile West Brom defence, they could well have a field day in this fixture. Betting on a Tottenham win and over 2.5 goals is definitely a bet that can pay a dividend. A table based on first half performances has Tottenham top of the table. Early leads are the order of the day with Tottenham this season. Five goals have been scored in the first half of Premier League games, more than any other team. They are yet to be losing at half time in a Premier League game this season. A bet on them leading at both half and full time also looks attractive.
