Can Liverpool Maintain their Dominance?

A new season begins and for Liverpool it has a start similar to that a year ago. 2019 saw them hosting the team that won the Championship last season (Norwich City) and they do so again as Leeds United visit Anfield.

The 1960s and 70s in particular saw some great battles between these two clubs. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then. Liverpool finally won that elusive Premier League title last season and by 18 points. The margin of that victory wasn't so high because of Liverpool's great form, more the fact Manchester City lost nine league games. Jurgen Klopp will know that he can't expect Guardiola's team to do that again this season.

Little has changed at Anfield since last season. You could argue, why did it need to after winning the title? At the time of writing this preview, their only signing had been Konstantinos Tsimikas from Olympiakos. He's unlikely to be appearing this weekend as Liverpool begin the new season.

The Reds have truly turned Anfield into a fortress. 57 league games unbeaten and in the last two seasons, 108 points out of 114. Home league games last season had an average of 3.6 goals scored and in 14 out of 19 home games, they led at both half and full time. If Liverpool can again dominate at home, then a successful title defence is a possibility.

Liverpool had a good rest due to their already being out of the Champions League. They drew 1-1 with Arsenal in the Community Shield, only to lose on penalties. Then, there was a bizarre friendly against Blackpool, going 2-0 down but going on to win 7-2.

Their early season fixture list isn't the easiest of ones. After this match, they travel to Chelsea and then host Arsenal. Klopp will want to see his team get off to a good start to again stamp their authority on the Premier League.

Finally Back in the Big Time

It's been a long wait for Leeds United as they finally return to the Premier League. What a start for them as they travel to take on the Premier League champions but it's a good fixture to get out of the way. Just what will Leeds be able to achieve this season?

It'd be heartbreaking of course if they made an immediate return to the Championship. A mid-table finish and a decent cup run would suit most of their fans. The summer has seen them busy in the transfer market with Rodrigo arriving from Valencia for £26 million. He'll hopefully provide a few goals up front, while Robin Koch can help prevent them at the other end.

Leeds may have won the Championship last season and there were plenty of fireworks but they had their fair share of problems. Nine league games were lost and like Liverpool, the ten-point margin of victory flattered them. A repeat of the form at the start of 2020 that saw them earn nine points from ten games has to be avoided this season.

United won 13 away league games last season but lost six. A win at Anfield would be an amazing start to life back in the Premier League but a Liverpool win with over 2.5 goals scored looks far more likely.
