MATCH PREVIEW
Just What Will Leeds do next?
Unpredicatble as ever, Leeds United go into this game looking for a third straight league win. They ended the weekend in 12th place and now host Everton who slipped to eighth after a surprise loss to Newcastle United on Saturday.
2020 had ended with Leeds winning three out of four games. Typical of their unpredictability, the other match was a 6-2 hammering at Old Trafford. 2021 didn't start at all well for them with three straight defeats and not a goal scored.
Although United had a healthy lead over the bottom three, their hopes of European football had diminished. Last week changed that though with a couple of away league wins. The victory at Newcastle wasn't too surprising, a 3-1 victory over Leicester was though. They are now only six points behind fifth placed West Ham United and with a game in hand.
Can United keep this form going though? Three times this season they have won two league games in a row. but never have they managed to stretch that to three. A home game against an inconsistent Everton side gives them a good chance of making it three straight wins. With a home game against Crystal Palace next Monday, a push for European football could well be on.
Home form has seen them win only three Premier League games this season. They won their opening game against Fulham in September but only earned two points from the next five. Recent wins over Newcastle and Burnley in December was followed by a surprise loss to Brighton.
Leeds have scored 35 league goals but conceded 36 at the other end. Their nine home league games have seen 27 goals scored. That doesn't mean every game is packed with goals though. Five out of those nine have had under 2.5 goals scored in them. The other four saw 22 goals scored in them. It's hard to work out just which kind of game we'll get in this match.
When it comes to goal scorer bets, don't rule out Jack Harrison. He's scored in three of his last four Premier League games. He and Patrick Bamford have to be seriously considered for anytime goal scorers.
Everton Just as Unpredictable
Predicting what Everton will do next isn't an easy task either. They are eighth in the Premier League, six points off fourth place but with two games in hand. It's a decent position to be in as we go into February.
Everton lost at home to Leeds in November. That was during a terrible patch of form. However, only one of their next league games were lost. December saw them win four straight league fixtures to again see them challenging for a top four finish. Two home league games last week though only produced a single point. A home draw with Leicester was pretty good, but then they lost 2-0 to struggling Newcastle United.
They need to bounce back from that shock defeat. One problem they have at present is the scoring form of Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He couldn't stop scoring for both Everton and England early on in the season. However, he's only scored once nine league and cup games. Jamie Rodriguez is back from injury but has still only scored in four league matches this season. Of their last seven away league matches, each goal has been scored by a different player.
While Everton have only one point from their last three home league games, they have won four of the last five on the road. Nine of their last nine away league matches have seen them get on the scoresheet. Up against Leeds, a bet on them scoring at least once looks a good one to make.
Four of their last six away league games have seen both teams score. That's another market that is worth a bet. Those kinds of markets are the way forward for this game. Betting on the match result is not the easiest of jobs here.
