Big Test for Chelsea
It's only the second week of the new Premier League season but this is an important game for both sides. It's a chance for us to find out just how good this new-look Chelsea side can be as they host champions Liverpool.
Frank Lampard's team got their season off to a winning start as they won 3-1 away at Brighton and Hove Albion. A much better beginning for the Blues after last season's 4-0 drubbing at Manchester United. Just as was the case last season, Chelsea follow up their opening league game with a match against Liverpool. Not the European Super Cup this time but their first home league game of the 2020/21 season.
Chelsea weren't at their best in that win at Brighton but it was a performance that showed promise for the new season. The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League last season but were 33 points behind Liverpool and 32 above the relegation zone. With the arrivals of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva, they will be hoping to finish a lot closer to the top spot this time around. Whether they can challenge for the title remains to be seen.
Home form was a bit of a puzzle last season. They only conceded 16 goals but managed to lose five matches. Three of those defeats were inflicted by Bournemouth, West Ham and Southampton. They ended the season well though with a run of six wins, including wins over Manchester City, Tottenham and Wolves with four clean sheets in their last five.
Their defensive abilities will be tested in this game. Just how Silva and Chilwell improve that area is vital to Chelsea's hopes this season. Questions are still being asked about Kepa Arrizabalaga and he will need to be at his best if Chelsea want to get anything from this fixture. There are injury worries ahead of this game though with Pulisic, Werner and Ziyech doubts but Chilwell is expected to be fit to play.
Reds off to a Winning Start
Last season saw the two teams face each other four times. Liverpool did the league double over Chelsea scoring seven goals and also won the Super Cup on penalties. They did lose to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup, the only one of the four matches that didn't see both teams score.
Liverpool got their new season off to an exciting and successful start with victory over Leeds United. Another win at Anfield, but the 4-3 scoreline gave their fans a worrisome afternoon. At least Mo Salah was in form with a hat-trick. Again, Chelsea fans will ask why the heck did Chelsea sell the Egyptian?
It wasn't just the incredible form at Anfield that won Liverpool the title last season. Away from home, the Reds were impressive, though that form dipped a little once the title was won. Only three of the last 27 away league fixtures have been lost. but just the one clean sheet in the last six played. Both teams scored in the last three away league games last season, a stat that could well come up this weekend.
So, we have a fascinating game ahead of us. Chelsea have only won one of their last six home league games against Liverpool (a 1-0 win in 2018). This looks a game that should have a few goals scored in it. Three out of the four games played last season saw over 2.5 goals scored and both teams score. Bets on those two markets look good ones to go for this weekend.
