Not too Good to Go Down?
Arsenal usually spend Christmas trying to convince us they can still win the league. That's not the scenario this year as they face the fact this might be the year they get relegated. They host Chelsea on Sunday hoping to avoid another league defeat.
The Gunners begin this set of Premier League fixtures in 15th place. They are a dozen points behind the final Champions League place and a scary four points above the relegation zone. After this game, they travel to Brighton and West Brom and dare it be said, they look relegation six-pointer fixures.
It's all been going wrong for Arsenal this season apart from in the Europa League. Perhaps their reserve side should play in the Premier League? Home form is usually among the best in the Premier League. Not this season though, it's currently the 16th best with just two wins and four losses. Throw in a 4-1 home loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup and it's a nightmare scenario.
Arsenal have failed to keep a home clean sheet in their last ten home league games. The last one they kept was against Norwich who were relegated soon after. The goals have dried up too with just a couple in the last five home league fixtures. Before that, Arsenal had scored at least twice in five of the last six. Still though, six of the last nine home Premier League games have had over 2.5 goals scored in them. A bet on that coming up in this game looks a good one.
Chelsea Bid to end Away Day Blues
Chelsea have lost their last two away league games. Despite that, they still go into this game the odds on favourites to win. Losses at Everton and Wolves were partly recovered by a 3-0 home win over West Ham on Monday.
That win left them fifth in the table, just a point behind the final Champions League place. Only six points separates them from league leaders Liverpool. They don't have the easiest of festive fixtures though. After this match, they host Aston Villa and Manchester City.
Chelsea used to have problems with their away form. Until those two recent losses, they had won three out of five and scored three goals on their travels on three occasions. They haven't always done too well away at Arsenal with only two of the last seven visits being won. Last season saw them do the double over Arsenal and a repeat of that this year would do them nicely. When these two sides do meet there are usually goals scored. Five of the last six have seen both teams score but with question marks over Arsenal, it's not so certain that bet will come up.
The big worry for Arsenal is their defence which has conceded ten home league goals already. Can they cope against the power of Chelsea's midfield and attack? Probably not and a bet on Chelsea to win with over 1.5 goals looks a winner.
