A Right Royal Start to the Season
The Championship looks as competitive as ever this season but there's a surprise leader after three games. Reading top the table with maximum points so far this season, but face a tough home game against Watford who were relegated from the Premier League last season.
Reading's only season in the Premier League was in 2012/13. The newly promoted side finished 19th and returned to the Championship. In the seven seasons that have followed, only twice have they finished in the top ten. Their best effort was a third place finish in 2016/17 losing on penalties to Huddersfield Town in the play-off final.
It's been a bit dismal since then though with two 20th placed finishes and 14th last season. They have turned things around so far this season though with wins over Derby County, Barnsley and Cardiff City. Only the 2-0 win over Barnsley was achieved at home and that was against a side that was reduced to nine men for the last 22 minutes.
The win over Barnsley was a welcome one indeed for Reading. It was their first home league victory since February when the world was a very different place. Who did they beat on that occasion? Yep, it was Barnsley and before that success, you have to go back to December 2019 for a home league win. Of their last 13 home league games, they've only managed to score twice in those two games against Barnsley.
New boss Veljko Paunovic hasn't been that busy in the summer transfer window. Their two main signings have been Ovie Ajeria from Liverpool (only just returning to full fitness) and Lewis Gibson on loan from Everton. A winning start to the season can't be moaned at though but this is a tough game for them this weekend.
Steady Start for Watford
This time last season, Watford were making a nightmare start to the new Premier League season. They never quite recovered from that and ended up being relegated. This season has got off to a better, though not spectacular start.
Three league games in and the Hornets are still unbeaten. Two games have been won and the other drawn but the goals aren't exactly flowing. Just two goals have been scored in their three league games, all by Watford.
They started the season with a 1-0 home win over Middlesbrough, then drew at Sheffield Wednesday 0-0. Back on home soil, Watford got their second win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Luton Town. A steady start that has taken them to fifth in the table, two points behind leaders Reading.
Not conceding goals is putting the largest smile on their faces but they will need to score more goals in the months ahead. Transfer dealings have seen some major departures with both Doucoure and Pereyra no longer at the club. Centre back William Troost-Ekong has joined from Udines, Glen Murray on loan from Brighton and James Garner is on loan from Manchester United.
A bet on under 2.5 goals in this game looks a reasonable one to make. Reading face a stiff test and can't always be trusted at home, so a draw could well be on the cards in this fixture.
