Royals Cannot Afford Defeat
Both Reading and Brentford are already out of the FA Cup. Instead, they are playing a game that may be far more important to their futures. Reading are fourth in the Championship and host Brentford, who are second.
There's a six point gap between the two clubs. Reading just cannot afford to lose this match and go nine points behind the final automatic promotion spot. They have only lost one game this year, a loss to Luton Town in the third round of the FA Cup.
In terms of the Championship, Reading have gone seven league games without defeat. Their last loss will be familiar to their opponents in this game. That's because it was a 3-1 defeat at Brentford on December 19. Reading will hope to avoid the start they made in the reverse fixture. On that occasion, they went 3-0 down in the first 29 minutes.
Since then, Reading have won four and drawn three in the Championship. That's kept them in the hunt for promotion after the great start and terrible runs they had earlier in the campaign. They are five points behind third placed Swansea, so they need to win this to avoid the possibility of the top three really going clear of the rest. The good news is that they are eight points above seventh place, so being part of the play-offs is looking likely.
You seem to get one thing or another with Reading. Three of their last seven have been drawn, all ending up goalless. That includes their draw at Stoke City at the weekend. The other four have all had over 2.5 goals scored in them. Judging by the way their opponents are playing, the latter looks like happening here.
Reading have won nine of their 13 home league games this season. No draw in those matches, a side bet on that might be an idea, one is certainly due. Eight goals have been scored by Reading in their last three home league fixtures, so over 2.5 and both teams to score is looking good here.
Brentford Going Top?
When you lose in the play-off final, you want to avoid them the following season. That's what Brentford intend doing and they are well on the way to achieving that aim. They begin this game in second place, a point behind leaders Norwich City and a draw will take above leaders Norwich City.
Brentford come into this game on an unbeaten league run of 20 games, since a loss at Stoke City in October. To say the goals have been rattling in of late is a massive understatement. Their last three games in the Championship has seen them score 14 goals. Ten were scored in home matches against Wycombe (who were beaten 7-2) and Bristol City, then the weekend saw them go to Middlesbrough and win 4-1.
Ivan Toney has to be considered for an anytime goalscorer bet. He's scored six in his last three games. Toney is also their penalty taker so that adds to his chance of getting on the scoresheet. Brentford have won five of their last seven away league games. Three of the last five have had over 2.5 goals scored in them and all five saw both teams score.
With Brentford in such good form, an away win is the tip here. Linking that up with over 2.5 goals and both teams scoring looks a good idea too.
