Rotherham United can escape the Championship relegation zone with a win at Luton Town but still get relegated on Saturday. They begin this match in 22nd place, three points behind Derby County in 21st with two games remaining. Their form isn't good but their goal difference is the best of the bottom four in the table.
A win at 12th placed Luton and then away at Cardiff City (currently eighth) on Saturday would keep them in the Championship, unless Derby were to beat Sheffield Wednesday by an almost double figure margin. It really is going to be a tense weekend but Rotherham have to play this game first. This is the last of the games in hand they have had but Rotherham haven't made much use of them.
United have just one win in their last nine league matches, a 3-1 home victory over QPR. They totally failed to build on that win with the next five fixtures all lost. It looked like becoming six on Saturday but a late goal got them a home 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers. That was only United's second goal in the last six games. Avoiding relegation with a scoring record like that isn't an easy task.
Away form is even worse in terms of scoring goals. None have been scored in their last four on the road. League One beckons with that kind of record. They have only scored in two of their last eight away league matches. When they do score though, they win the match as was seen at Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol City. They need Michael Smith to start scoring again. He's scored three of their last four away goals. He may be their top scorer but he's only scored one in the last ten.
A draw in this game isn't a disaster for them. They could then go to Cardiff on Saturday, win that match and survive if Derby fail to beat Sheffield Wednesday. A main task at Luton is not to lose the game and suffer a heavy defeat. Even a narrow loss here would see them stay up as long as they beat Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday beat Derby. Buying a calculator before the weekend might be an idea.
Top Ten Target for Hatters
Luton Town know what Rotherham are going through. They spent most of last season in the relegation zone before making a late recovery. This season has been better for the Hatters and they are hoping to finish in the top half of the table. A win here would take them above Millwall into 11th and only behind tenth placed Middlesbrough on goal difference.
Saturday saw them draw 1-1 at home to Middlesbrough. Luton took a 19th minute lead but only kept it for two minutes. That draw extended their unbeaten league run to five games and that includes a home win over now promoted Watford. It's their best league run of the season and that top ten finish is possible. Their final game is at QPR on Saturday.
Home form has seen Luton lose just one of their last five Championship games. Three clean sheets have been kept in those matches. Five of their last six at home have seen under 2.5 goals scored. Low scoring games have been a feature of their season with 31 out of 44 having under 2.5 goals scored and 15 out of 22 at home.
Luton have the form to win this game and a bet on them can be a winner. Combining the win with under 2.5 goals in the match looks a great wager too. An anytime scorer bet on Jamie Collins is worth a bet too. The Luton player has scored twice in the last four games and is their penalty taker.
