United after their Share of Glory
Manchester City won yet another trophy last weekend and United fans will be so envious. They might remind City fans that they lost at home to United on their way to winning the Carabao Cup. Even so, it's time Manchester United had some more success of their own, such as getting back into the Champions League.
United start the weekend fifth in the table and three points behind Chelsea in fourth. They are unbeaten in their last eight league and cup ties but that's not the only recent impressive statistic. The fact that they have only conceded two goals in those eight games is a big step forward. Three clean sheets have been kept in their last four home league games, that's compared to conceding in 16 of their previous 17.
Despite the improved defending, Manchester United still lack consistency at Old Trafford. Only once this season have they won two home league games in a row. That's not the kind of statistic usually used for United at home. Only five of their last 11 home league fixtures have been won with points droppe in two of the last three.
They have still managed seven home league victories, exactly half the number Liverpool have won this season. United may not have consistency but they do have a new hero. Bruno Fernandes has scored in each of the last three games. Who said you can't sign top players in the January transfer window?
City on the Rise
Manchester City won the Carabao Cup and it could still be a big season if they play their cards right. They know that retaining their Premier League title is extremely unlikely. 22 points behind with a game in hand is still a depressing read but second place is looking good. As are their Champions League hopes after a 2-1 win at Real Madrid in the first leg of their last 16 tie.
Winning their appeal against their European ban would be another bonus for City. While waiting for that decision, City travel to Old Trafford where they have already won once this season. They put in a fantastic first half performance against United in their Carabao Cup semi-final. A repeat of that would put United back in their place after their win in the second leg.
City come into this game having won their last four league and cup games. Their top strikers are in decent form, though a goal from Raheem Sterling would come in handy. At the time of writing this preview, he's yet to score a goal this year. Perhaps this is the weekend he finds his scoring boots again.
Away form for City has seen them win nine away games in the Premier League, still three less than Liverpool. Three of the last four have been won but they are still prone to the odd defeat with four this season. Yet two of their last three games against United have been lost but both at home.
Five of the last seven meetings between these two sides have seen both teams score. That looks a decent bet for this Old Trafford clash. United's defence has been doing better in recent games but this is a massive challenge for them. Only once since 2016 have they kept a league clean sheet against City. An away win with both teams scoring is a good bet to make for this derby game.
