The Fightback Starts Here
Manchester City's dreams of winning three Premier League titles in a row aren't looking good. The 3-1 loss at Anfield last weekend has left them in fourth place and nine points behind the league leaders. They need to go on the kind of run that has been achieved in the past but can they do it in the future?
The simple truth is that Manchester City have lost a quarter of their Premier League games this season. 13 goals have been conceded in 12 games that's compared to 23 in 38 last season. City don't have problems scoring goals but it's their defending that is causing problems this season and they will face a tough examination against an in-form Chelsea team.
Seven out of 12 opponents in the Premier League this season have scored against City. That makes a bet on both teams to score in this game a potentially winning one. The departure of Vincent Kompany and injuries to Laporte and Zinchenko coud cost City dearly this season.
Home form for Manchester City continues to be mainly dominant. They have scored 19 goals in their six home league games this season. They did however lose at home to Wolves, only their second loss in the last 28 Premier League games played at the Etihad. City daren't have any more afternoons like the one they had against Wolves.
Massive Test for Chelsea
That might just happen this weekend as Chelsea head to Manchester. They have already lost twice to United this season, can they avoid a third Mancunian defeat on Saturday? There were plenty of concerns about the kind of season they'd have after that opening loss to Manchester United and struggling to get off the mark at home. A look at the form guide for the last ten games has them in second and with four more points than their opponents this weekend.
Chelsea come into this game having won their last six Premier League fixtures. Admittingly, that run hasn't been against the most stellar of opposition and none of the sides beaten finished in the top eight last season. They are third in the table, eight points behind Liverpool (who they have already lost to in the league this season) and a point ahead of City.
Wins breed confidence and that's important for any team. There's also the more impressive matter of an away win and home 4-4 draw with Ajax in the Champions League. The latter result though does make you worry about how Chelsea will get on against the likes of Sterling and Aguero.
Since that opening weekend loss at Old Trafford, Chelsea have won five away league games in a row. No low-scoring affairs either with 18 goals scored and eight conceded. That both teams to score bet looks more attractive by the minute doesn't it? Again, the opposition on the road hasn't been from the top of the Premier League. This weekend will be a major test for Frank Lampard's young team.
This should be a cracker of a game and one that will tell us a great deal about how the rest of the season is going to progress. Liverpool fans will be begging for a draw in this match. City will be anxious to get back in winning ways though. With home advantage and an inconsistent Chelsea defence in front of them, a City win with both teams scoring looks the best wager.
