Everton Still Trying 20 Years On
It's still not known who will be the Everton manager for this Merseyside Derby. A 2-1 loss at Leicester on Sunday left them a place above the relegation zone and Marco Silva is in deep trouble. If he does survive to this game, he has to somehow manage his side to their first win at Anfield in 20 years.
Everton have big plans for the future with a new stadium on its way. Their owner wants them to step out of the shadow of Liverpool FC but it's not going to plan. After huge investment in the summer, Everton start this game 16 places and 26 points behind their neighbours.
Sunday was looking good for Everton as they went a goal up at Leicester City. Even a draw would have been an improvement but a goal in the 94th minute doomed the Toffees to their eighth league defeat of the season. That's more than Liverpool have lost in the last three seasons! That shadow gets longer by the minute doesn't it?
Everton have only won two of their last ten league games, one against Southampton who are in the relegation zone. Away form is a big worry for them, the win at Southampton ended a run of just three points from nine games. Now they head for Anfield and just a goal would be a start for them. Everton have failed to score in their last three games against Liverpool. Not since 2010 have they beaten the Reds, this is the 20th game since that victory.
Reds Chasing Another Home Win
While Everton battle against relegation, Liverpool begin a month that could end with them as World and European champions. Now that really is bragging rights over your neighbours. Liverpool ended the weekend eight points clear of Leicester but now 11 clear of third placed Manchester City.
They put in a great first half performance against Brighton on Saturday but had to eventually hold on for a 2-1 win. Three more points in the bag and Liverpool are getting the results, even when their form isn't top notch. Home form continues to be a tale of highly impressive statistics. Seven out of seven in the league and those 21 points are seven more than Everton have earned home and away this season. One area of improvement is in their defending. Liverpool keep on winning at home but they still struggle to keep clean sheets. Their last 11 home league games has seen them concede a goal.
Jurgen Klopp's team built a sizeable lead last season but still ended runners-up. They look a notch above the 2018/19 team and this looks like being another painful night for Everton. That's whether it is a game played with a caretaker manager or the final nail in the coffin for Silva. A bet on Liverpool to win and both teams to score or Liverpool winning with over 2.5 goals in the game have both been winners in all seven Liverpool home league games, number eight looks likely here.
